I was in the Bay Area today and picked up a new anemone that looks some what like a bubble tip but its dark purple and the tips are smaller. Does anyone know what kind it is? - sorry about the pics my camera sucks

I looked online for pics of anything that looked similar, does anyone one have one of these that has a pic? Thanks

Judging from the pink mouth and the color of the base, I would say that its a dyed sebae anemone (H. crispa) whose dye is fading from the tentacles.

I believe phil is right.
The base of the anemone should almost always be a different color, and the mouth is showing a fading as phil said. Will it eat? ime dyed anemone's that won't eat are a goner. I hope for you that this one recovers though.

If I recall correctly, and I don't remember where I read this, but isn't it fairly usual for an anemone that was at one point dyed to end up dead for seemingly no reason a few months down the road?

I thought I had read that the dye had no immediate effects, but ended up having a distressingly low survival rate.

Bleached and dyed are totally different circumstances...very sorry to hear about your loss, though!

How large is it?

Just curious, because I saw some small 'nems (silver-dollar size) at a PetCo recently that looked similar except they were brownish instead of purple. They didn't look very healthy to me and there weren't any employees that knew what it was, so I wasn't about to buy one. If it was a mini-carpet though, I might re-think it.

Thanks,

-Sonja

Did these anemones have some yellow marbling on the foot? In the old days they called them purple mat anemones. I think they are actually small H. malu or H. crispa.

I didn't get a close enough look to tell. Now I'm gonna have to go back and check them out. :D

I do know that one seemed to have its foot buried in the sand even though there were several pieces of LR in the tank.

when its fully opened its about 6", should i be worried and take this out of my tank ? Also you said it looks dyed, does that mean its going to keep losing its color?

Just went by there, whatever it was is gone. I wouldn't be surprised if it had died, whatever it was didn't look like any healthy 'nem I'd ever seen.
