Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

talk about generalization!!!! could you explain how your growth was as good with LED as it was with MH? weight, growth rates, parameters, etc, etc.... or was it...hey, "stuff" still growing the same with LEDs, I think?

Ummmm..... I am going to guess visual inspection. Is this not how we all measure growth rates. I don't know a single reef keeper that pulls his corals out and weighs them. I, for one, take pictures of each and every coral at least once a week. It seems as good a measure of growth rates as anything we have.

P.S. - I have 3 different types of Goniopora in my tank. What are the "Goniopora Police" going to do about it?:spin2:

Discussing my experience is a specific point. I never stated everyone had the same experience or would. You read that into my statement.

I used visual inspection and photo reference, just like I suspect everyone else does. I have yet to see anyone do differently.

Why the hostility?

i'm posting about the statement; "My growth is as good with LED as what I had with MH. Generalizations just do not work in this debate."

which is anecdotal and generalized "at best".....and yes there are people who weigh and measure coral growth, they are called researchers!!!

here is a list: Hoegh-Guldberg, Kinsey, Davies, Dubinsky, Marubini....

how long have you had your Goni-be-poora?

:lol2:

no hostility intended!!!! just questing your experience....and having a debate....:lol2:

I concied it is an anecdotal observation. I am a hobbyist not a researcher. Do you read the riot act to all hobbyist that make similar statements?

As far as the generalization, you do not get that one. Some of my corals appear to grow better, some worse and some about the same based on my anecdotal observations

you can't achieve that with LED for sure.

Haven't touched a MH in 15 years LOL. Ordered a 150 hqi to play with on a smaller tank I have running. Will be interesting to go back in time..

Some posts in this thread sure are elitist and disgusting.

This thread has single handedly encouraged me to never post talking about lights. I might get shot.

elitist???????

no one is saying you can't join their "country club", only you can't bring your LEDs.....

Well this has taken a 180 degree turn from a few years ago! Then, those who held on to MH or T5 were derided as ignorant, wasteful, and perhaps superstitious. If you didn't want to spend 2-3X as much to buy the new whiz-bang LED rig, you were just not "with it". Now if you want to stick with the cheaper old school tech you are "elitist".

A sizable amount of reef keepers participate in this hobby because they want the challenge of keeping the most delicate Acroporas with amazing color. They don't do it to "have a fish tank" or because it will "look nice in the house". These hobbyists look very critically at tanks with different lighting, and will go with any lighting that achieves the result they want. The LED believers can shake their heads at these folks for not buying the marketing pitch from the manufacturers all they want. Until we are convinced that something WORKS as well or better than MH or T5 we will gladly stay with our dinosaur technology. Proof of this will have to come from photographic evidence from tanks using LED long term, so far I'm still waiting to be convinced.

I'm hurt Matt. :)

Mark, you are probably the most reasonable voice on this thread and I'm glad you are here to lend your experience. Your tank has shown some very good growth and color, no slight intended. Perhaps in a few years with more tanks developing under the right amount of LEDs I may be inclined to agree that LEDs are all the way there. So far the pinnacle tanks are still under MH and T5s. I hope mine is in that group some day:)

I think you are well on your way. I hope my tank gets there too one day.

Most of what we are seeing, IMO, is an emerging tech vs. established tech debate. It happens all the time in many fields. People can become entrenched in the old or jump on the new bandwagon. It just boils down to preference and what set of constraints you are willing to live with or work better for your situation.

Hope you know I was picking.

Yep yep and for what its worth the Hydra 52 would be on my short list of LED fixtures to buy if I was in the market for one, specifically because of your experience:thumbsup:

I dont know why it has to be a "one or the other" debate. I have been using both MH and LED for a while now and it works very well. I like having the best of both worlds. Mine is a dual system, either one can provide enough light to run the tank. I can now choose, as the seasons permit, which one takes over the dominent role.
