Anyone trying multichip led vs d120?

Mixed lps sps reef. Have 3 250 watt 14k mh and went to get away from bulb replacement and heat. Testimg in the middle a d120. Been a week and it seem to holding up well. Would like to buy they full spectrum units with 90degree optics.

CrazyEyes,

I am not oppose to DYI but I just don't have that time and doesn't seem like I am saving much $$$ compared getting three d120's. I found this Multichip link on my search for D120's.

Coming from someone that went down the DYI Multi-chip road... I can/will admit, I would advise against it. By the time I was done I could have gotten a pre-made lighting that would have, more than likely, not burned out a lot of my corals. But if you do want to go with a multi-chip I would personally go with some of the hybrid chips (455nm/20000k). I installed some on a friends tank, along with a 660nm and 420nm multi-chip and they are working amazingly.

Or,
8- Philips Luxeon M 5,000K 12 Watt LED chips
16- Philips Luxeon M ROYAL BLUE 12 Watt LED chips
6- inventronics 40w driver - 700ma

You can even buy 63° optics for them if wanted, they're 90° as is. That's right around $500 to like a 210 and would be be very reef capable.

Wish they had the hybrid chips reasonable when I started putting together my current build. Oh well, leaves me something to look forward to with the next tank.

thank you all for advice. Seems like going to the d120 is a better way for now. I wish I had time and skill to build a dyi setup.

Yeah I would say d120's are the way to go now especially since you can customize them just the way you like for about what $10-20 more than the diy route. I too went with a smaller diy x2 as well before I found out about the d120

bigzman, i have that set up, if you get it then get the size up. regarding the fire, that can happen to any fixture- its a glitch! and they switched manufactures. besides for that a lot of the risk is diminished b/c the driver is separate so the light wont overheat.

hope i was helpful!

Mendel,

Thank you. I think I am going with the d120 but I will admit I like the multi chip idea. I just wish they had something for those running 30" deep tanks.
