Anyone up for another 135 Thread?

Art, thanks for the concern. However, the "crack" is doing great. We now have support underneath that end, which I think was the problem. I siliconed it back, and had it inspected by several members of my local reef club, and family members. I am feeling very comfortable with it, and also, it has been fine for almost a month now. I really don't think there is a problem.

Greg, I just did a 20% water change, and I am going to measure nitrates tonight. My ammonia and nitrite are at zero, but I'll check them tonight too. I haven't popped the bubble algae, I was warned not to by another local reefer. I was thinking an emerald crab, but I've done some reading, and it looks as though they are unreliable. I'm hesitant to get a Foxface, because if you see my stocking list (page 1), I don't really want to get another big fish. If it would be OK, great, but I'm hesitant. That's what I am considering taking my chances with the emeralds; if they do eat it, great, if they don't, I'll have to catch them. What do you think I should do?

The tank is looking great; tested mostly perfect across the board:

Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0-5ppm (can't really see, I'm color blind, gotta ask mom )
pH: 8.2
SG: 1.025
Phosphate: 0 - 0.03ppm
Ca: 400 - 430ppm
dKH: 7.4; Alkalinity: 2.63 meg/L

The dKH is my problem, I will look in Randy's forum to learn how to fix this.
 
If you're careful, Tyler, you can just remove the bubble algae with your fingers (being careful not to pop them, of course). I once had a little bubble algae pop up, and I just picked them off, and they never came back.

I think we picked up both our tanks in Westchester on the same day from Glass Cages and I think I told you that they chipped my tank when the two putzs slid the tank across the trailer bed floor.

Anywho,
Just curious as to why you bought Giovanni's setup. I had gone up to see his setup and IMO, it wasn't worth 2k. Lot's of equipment but his LR was bubble algae infested to the point that I told him forget about $4 lb, I would not take it for free. That's how bad the infestation was.

I bought Giovanni's setup for a few reasons. Mainly because it was pretty cheap for all that stuff. I didn't need a lot of the stuff though, so I decided I would sell the stuff I didn't need. If all my deals go through, I will end up selling $1,600-$1,700 worth of stuff. I will only have paid $300-$400 for skimmer, lights, rocks, controllers, PHs, wavemakers, and a few other things. Regardless of the bubble algae, that, to me is a great deal. An $8 emerald crab should be able to take care of what I couldn't scrub off.

However, I am kicking myself for not waiting a little longer. Turns out there are tons of people selling complete, bigger setups than Giovanni's for cheaper. Dang :rolleyes:

So were you able to determine if the chip was self induced (stand issue) or if it was damaged prior to your pickup?
 
Nope, we never figured that out. Glasscages never emailed me back, so I'm not sure I will be doing business with them again...unless I want to start a reef in college and am very short money wise :D
But my dad and I fixed the stand issue, so everything looks fine now.
 
Well, 4 days later, and nothing significant has happened :p

I tested out my plumbing, and turns out a bulkhead decided to leak :rolleyes:. So today, I siliconed the hell out of it; between the gasket and glass, between gasket and bulkhead, around the outside of the bulkhead...that sucker isn't going to leak. Ummm, I cleaned out Giovanni's sump, and a few Rubbermaid containers that I forgot about, and I should be getting the starts of my cleaner crew in a couple days. Sunday, I'm getting a few corals; let's see...Montipora digitata, anthelia, xenia, Devil's Hand, and maybe some frilly mushrooms. All are essentially unkillable, so it will be good (especially since they are free :D)

That's basically it, I will update in a couple days when I get the cleaners or corals, whichever comes first.
 
Ok, nothing leaks now :D

Got the whole thing running, my Palythoas are really appreciative of the new found glory that is flow. All of them are extended all the way, they look very nice.

I have two problems though. It is loud, and I have tons of microbubbles. I know how to fix the loudness, I have to install my Stockman (I was too eager to see it running, so I just have a pipe with holes in there). I was going to do a search on microbubbles, but ReefCentral is being typical, and I can't search. I recall something about putting baffles in the sump. That's basically it for today, corals on Sunday, yay!
 
Hi! Just found your thread and I gotta say I'm really looking forward to tagging along. I have microbubbles as well and I got rid of about 90% of them by adding a filtersock. It works really well. I wish I could add baffles, but because my sump is kinda strange,

I can't add them. So how long did it take you for you to cycle your tank? I just put in my LR and LS 4 days ago and I'm already itching to put something in.
 
I would go with baffles if you can there's no maintenance with them, with the filter sock you have to continually make sure it is clean.

Took me probably 2 weeks.

I am going to stop my return pump when I get home, pump that water into a tub, glue/silicone in some baffles, and then pump the water back the next day. Would it be a problem if I cannot do it until after Sunday(I'm getting a few corals at a local meeting)?

The microbubbles have miraculously stopped! I think my pipes just needed a little bit of time to "slime up" so to say. I think I will still put in baffles, but at a time when I have the time. The filter sock I will be able to do whenever though. Hooray for success in my reef! :rollface:

Ok, so an update today. I set my RO/DI unit up in my tank 'room' (little bar, 6'x6' area where I keep all my stuff). Works fine, and now it's not in Mom's way :rolleyes:.

Livestock wise, we're doing great. Shrimpy is hiding in the rocks, and is red now, not clear. The digi has really colored up already, the purple polyps are really cool. The devil's hand has all his polyps out as well. The anthelia and xenia look nice too, nice and colorful. AND I figured out how to connect my IceCap to the wall, so now I can have actinics!

Today was a good day. I get lots of things done when I am in a good mood, aka 93 on the math test, and 3.7 GPA for 3rd quarter :D
 
AHHHHHHH

The day keeps getting better! The actinics are running GREAT; hooked it up all by myself. Turns out Giovanni had everything connected, I just had to plug the wires into the ballast, and the powercord into the wall. :rolleyes:

I like my tank now. I'm not building it anymore, but maintaining it and adding stuff to it. Lots more fun :D

The camera is here (Dad's house) right now and the tank is at Mom's house, so pictures will have to wait :(
