You don't need sponges for filtration, and they often make nutrient issues worse because they trap detritus and culture bacteria in an area where the water is flowing too quickly. With that high flow there is too much oxygen for denitrifying bacteria to grow, so you don't get a complete nitrogen cycle. Waste is only processed into nitrates, but not all the way to nitrous oxide gas. When the nitrates stay in the system, they fuel algae and irritate inverts. If you skip the sponges the bacteria will grow on other surfaces in the tank where all the bacteria can live so you have a full biofilter instead of a partial one.
If you do decide to use the sponges make sure they are not treated with antimicrobial stuff. A lot of sponges are, to keep from getting smelly over time. That will interfere wil biofiltration.
