Anyone Use Lowes Play Sand

for a dsb needs to be at least 4"

You can do what I did and do part dsb and part ssb. I personally wouldn't ever buy live sand. Maybe some but just a cup or two full. You really never know how someone took care of their tank. It could be full of gunk and nastys. I'd rather have a nice clean sand bed seeded.

ya I wouldnt buy live sand either, im prolly just gonna go with the 4" it will probaly vary though, Do you guys put sand under your rocks as well or just around them?

dsb is 4-6". if it's 4" it may be less in spots due to your flow patterns. also, i think they up to 6" because the calcium based sand will dissolve over time. when i had a dsb, i made a pvc and eggcrate rack about 4" high that supported my rock, then added the sand.

I put very little underneath just to have the rock over the glass.

well I put in 2 bags today of quickrete play sand and it is alot whiter than it looks in the bag, prolly almost as white as southdown.

the only problem is with 60x turnover rate im having a little trouble adjusting the flow to not blow the sand to much, im hoping it will eventually stop pushing it around and stay in one place

Once bacteria gets ahold of it, it isn't bad.

some play sand has siacate in it not all but i would stick with reef sand why risk your investment on going cheap on sand

Pretty funny, a lot of people use silica sand sucessfully , I do too.

You do know what type of sand is in the ocean correct? And there is quite a few people who have a tank with silicate sand, including me. And I have 0 issues and my you won't find the color brown in any of my corals.

its Quickrete Premium Playsand, its in the concrete section at lowes and is like $4 a bag....I used 3 on my 120 and it looks great, really nice white.
