Anyone used (Real) Ocean Water in Their Tanks?

I do and have for the last 2+ years. I buy it from the LFS. They say its been run through a UV. But who knows. Its probably still warm from the ocean when the store gets it.

I have been using it too from the LFS.
They told me, that theres no UV filtration used...as it comes from the ocean is as they get it and how it is sold.
I usually test the water buy for water changes.

My LFS also says the same thing its been "filtered" but anyone actually gone out there with a few buckets and picked some up? I started my tank like this, my friend has a big 200g tank with an external pump so we sucked up 70g worth and start the tank like that. So far (even after water changes) so good.

i do 2 since day 1 of my tank it will cycle faster to i have being tinking about doing the same to go out and picup some water soon

I believe someone was talking about this a few weeks ago, and Rogger (I think, I apologize if it was someone else) said he did, until it almost caused a tank crash for one reason or another. There is obvious danger in using straight ocean water, especially when collected right at the shore. Best quarantine method would be pouring them all through a micron filter, UVing them, and then leaving the water in the dark for 2 weeks. But I suppose that that eliminates the convenience factor of the water in the first place!

id imagine the biggest problem would be the bacteria in the water. so if its left uncirculated, there could be a large ammount of ammonia present when the water is left stagnent.

Well my friend collects it usually when the tide is coming in, meaning from the ocean. And I have not done it in a while, but I dont plan to do it anymore for my set up tank, but I would imagine the natural ocean bacteria would probably help a tank setting up.

Ya from what ive heard and read most lfg and delivery men lie about this. Ive also heard the 8 miles out idea also. Truth is most do not micron filter, UVing or anything else. The opposite is true also, all the good stuff in the ocean is also remove when you nuke/filter it. I read on the board one of the oldest tanks on RC has been running on Nsw 20+years with no problems. Price wise for what I pay for the NWS, I couldnt make R/O and buy the salt for close to the price let alone the time it takes to make it.
I do 300/g worth of water changes on my tank. ....All good so far

I forgot to mention up to 250/g here for $50 usually get 300/g for $60 delivered and he also helps remove the old water. Taken less than 10 mins start to finish with his 2 hoses and pumps

Here is a great read on what's going on in our oceans today.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/oceans/la-oceans-series,0,7842752.special

That picture of the two divers and that huge sewer pipe dumping partially treated sewage into the ocean was taken right off of Hollywood, FL.

I really think this is a MUST read for anyone in the hobby, or anyone who's concerned about our oceans and the planet.
*Shudder*

Maybe I am missing something in this huge repot but were exactly did you read that the photo was taken of Hollywood bch and that it is a partially treated sewage.
For what I understand this is a picture taken in Australia and they are runoff water, which is not the same as partially treated sewage.

Beat me to it.

Did you see one of the "fun facts" on the title page was local too?
97% of elkhorn and staghorn coral off Florida's coast have disappeared since 1975

I should have warned that it's a rather large article. ;)
Page 5 is mostly about Florida and the Keys.

It really broke my heart to read about Looe key.
That was my favorite place to skindive when I was a kid.

Like Darcy mentioned to me yesterday, someday soon our little tanks might be the only place you'll be able to see living ocean corals...
