Anyone using a Dehumidifier need suggestion!!

Anyone using a portable plug in dehumidifier? The reason I ask is that I purchased one and it produce warm air that eventually fills the whole room up and makes the room really warm. Is this normal or am I better off getting a room air conditioner to cut down the humidity? I have a central air unit also but when the outside temps are comfortable I turn it off.

Yep that's what they do. When it's cool and dry enough to open the windows the best bet is fans to circulate as much of the outside air in and as much of that humid air out.

'Tis why I followed the sage advice of capncapo here on RC and let my ductwork do the heavy lifting. It's true that days like the last few are the hardest. I wish I could open my basement windows for this purpose but can't and wouldn't be safe...

I use a Frigidaire de-humidifier--it sucks up about a gallon/day. In the winter, my fishroom is around 86 degrees & sometimes I have to open the window a crack. I have the heater vent blocked. I do not use it at all in the summer. If it's nice out,why not open the window & let the humidity out? I also have a ceiling fan running on high all the time.

So, if you don't turn on the AC, you can't use the ductwork method, right?

I'm still debating to go with the dehumidifier or installing register at the ductwork method.....the bottom line is which method costs the less $$

Well, the air circulates through the house with fan on, so the humid air disperses. Also helps as with windows open upstairs and fan on, much air goes out of the house.

I use a dehumidifier in the basement in my fish room. I have around 1000 gallons of water down there. I can keep the room between 30-40% humidity. I do not mind the extra heat the dehumidier generates. It keeps my room warmer and the heaters on the tanks do not need to be used as much. It takes out around 3 gallons per day. I also have a 75 gallon reef upstaris. My humidity is between 40-50% depending on the day. I am going to go use the method ostrow brought up. I have not added it yet but will so soon. I figure what ever can help out I am going to use. Most of my room is freshwater and the tanks are covered well so I don't have as much evaporation at the big reef setups.

My best guess Is I would use a combination of the dehumidifier and the method ostrow brought up. I guess it depends how you are setup.

my fishroom is about 12 foot by 15 foot for an inwall 125 tank. The dehumidifier raises the tanks temp approx 2 degrees, luckily its in the basement so I can hold 80 degrees year round. Yes they do put off some serious heat.

1. Is tank near a outside wall?
2. if so imstall a bathroom exhaust fan. works great for my room is now around 75 and tank is around 80.

Chuck your solution is potentially dangerous, depending on age of house and type of furnace system. You can create a negative pressure situation in the basement that would run a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from the furnace exhaust. Some in very cold climates install these VERY expensive air exchangers, which replace the vented air. This would be way overkill for us.

I may not going to get into a building control/house control subject but you should do your home work.

A bathroom exhaust fan will not be a problem there is a test to check your carbon monoxide furnace exhaust is working correct and a way to fixed it.

I would say your are not going to have a bathroom install in your basement anytime soon.
