Anyone using biopellets for their FO tanks?

Greetings....hope everyone's getting prepped for the upcoming holidays!

Anyway, my 65 currently houses my 5" Undulated Trigger (my boy Shamrok - got him the size of a quarter in '08), 2 large Domino Damsels (3"), and a fiesty little 3-stripe Damsel (1.5"). They've all been together for almost a year now. :fish1:

Filtration is an oldie (but goodie?) Tidepool II commercial sized bio-wheel sump by Marineland (don't think they make them anymore). I change the mechanical media in the 3 trays and carbon bag monthly, along with a 10 gallon wc. I've used various other phosphate and nitrate absorbing pads but don't really notice any difference in water quality with them.

To be honest, I rarely test any parameters on this tank - except SG occasionally and I know my nitrates and phosphates are off the charts. I feed pellets and clams on the half-shell on alternate days and the occasional fiddler crab or cray fish for Shamrok.

Of course I have beautiful HA everywhere and, well, I'm getting tired of looking at it. Also got a clump of chaeto in there.

The bio-wheel is the biological filter (no LR) and of course destroys ammonia and nitrite but, as is well known, spits out tons of nitrate . My question is would a BRS reactor with the biopellet chamber (http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/10-re...e-for-use-with-the-brs-biopellet-reactor.html) help any (I already have both single and double BRS reactors laying around)? Oh yeah, I have an SRO 1000 skimmer that kicks butt.

Here's today's brief video:

Reactor will help. I'd suggest adding live rock, and really upping the water changes. 10 gallons out of a 65 (plus sump) is not nearly enough IMO. Good luck

Thanks airplanes...I agree, I probably should go to bi-weekly WC. I'm not going to add any LR though...not sure I could put enough in there to be beneficial and keep up with the heavy feeding - and still have ample swimming space. I guess my goal is to have one of those nice artificial reefs but with sufficient filtration to keep nutrients low and minimize the HA. Thanks again.

65g is too small to keep up with the load that carnivorous fish like undulated trigger produces. I'd think you need more than 100g to maintain decent water quality.
I run bio pellets in my fowlr. While it will help you keep nitrate and phosphate down for the time being, it's a bandaid and will not fix the root of the problem, which is too small of a tank. As the trigger grows and consumes more food, the bio pellet + small sro 1000 will not keep up. You will need a bigger tank and stronger equipment eventually.

The bottom line is, if you can't maintain < 40ppm of nitrate with weekly 20% water changes! your tank is overstocked
