Anyone what to throw their hat in the ring...

Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Animal Management, Animal Husbandry, Animal Science, or closely related field and experience equivalent to five years full time professional level work handling, breeding, and exhibiting an exotic/zoo animal collection, at least two years of which involved supervisory responsibilities. A graduate level degree in Zoology, Animal Management, Animal Husbandry, Animal Science, or closely related field may substitute for one year of the required non-supervisory experience.

It looks like I won't be able to work there :(

I think they are having a dream. Who with those degrees and experience that they are requiring would even think about working for that salary?

I have only a high school diploma and several years of sitting on my butt, and the ambition of a sloth and I still make more than that!

What they want and what they get may be two entirely different things, all they can do is say no to an applicant. You might be surprised by who could get consideration. It is a little troublesome that they say that you can replace actual public aquarium experience with collegiate credentials. Currently there is only one graduate program in Oregon that covers public aquarium husbandry knowledge. The others that they list don’t cover any related knowledge pertaining to aquarium management. They would get much more qualified applicants if they would reverse the qualifications of college degree credentials in exchange for the actual years of experience the applicants have in the field. I’ve worked with many newly graduated Marine Biologists that couldn’t tell you a freshwater fish from a saltwater fish, or what husbandry requirements consist of, it’s just not part of the curriculum.

Places that are interviewing usually post requirements that are a step or 2 or 3 above what they expect to hire. Hey, you never know when you may get lucky, on either side of that line.

If you have a Bachelor's and accepting jobs for $17.62 an hour, you need a new set of goals in life. I make way better then that sitting right here playing poker and chatting lol.

"$17.62 per hour with an excellent benefit package." I will take it if they only add one zero to the number. :)

Gary, I agree with you on the experiance Vs. degree.

That paper dosn't mean you know your @#$ from hole in the ground.

Remember the Wise Words from the wizard on the Wizard of Oz "You don't need a brain... You need a diploma"!!!!!

Aint it true!!

Oh so very true;

The stories I could tell you about the people.

Speaking of which that salary is actually pretty consistant across the country for similar jobs. I looked into 4 different positions myself and the first thing I said was "thats all you pay?" I also looked into teaching jobs in England and make a lot more in Oklahoma then I would in England and Oklahoma is about the lowest paying state in the US.

Sarah that absolutely true. It is for the love and not the money.

The zoo pays what it can afford, its as simple as that. We saw how they have to make do with limited funding while we visited there.
