Anyone with submersible return pumps?

Im setting up a 240g 48"x48"x24" reef tank in my office and would like to keep it as simple as possible since my secretary is gonna take care of it while Im not at work.

I bought a used 240g reef tank that came with a Barracuda and 2 Darts for a closed loop. Im gonna plug the closed loop holes. Keep it simple again.

I might just sell the external pumps and get submersible pumps, maybe 2 Quiet One 4000 (1017 GPH each) with just 50 watts of energy consumption each pump. I have a Quiet one 4000 for return pump in my home 70g reef tank and like it very much since it runs silent.

The main flow inside the tank will be from 2 Vortech MP40s

The tank is not gonna be SPS dominated (might not even have SPS), just a bunch on Softies, LPS and RBTAs and a carpet anemone.


What do you guys think?

Another option I could go with is to run a single or maybe dual Maxijet 5500 submersible pumps with 1,380 GPH each @ 75 watts.

Use ocean runner 6500 for my return on my 300 very quiet and decent flow and not much heat, only issue I had was finding tubing to fit their adapters had to heat to fit.

Go with eheim, by far the best submersible pumps I've ever used and i've tried all the ones mentioned above. If the 1262 isn't enough (900gph) you could use 2.

Theres a larger Water Blaster pump a HY10000W
Watts 130
Max Flox 2,600gph
Max head 15.5 ft

and only $30 more than the HY270

Thats good news, a small return pump on a large system... what skimmer size do you have and is the flow rate from the mag 12 on your sump enough for your skimmer?

I would love to use a small submersible return pump like you and provide the main flow with vortechs but Im just afraid that the water flow trough the sump wont be enough for a large skimmer rated between 200g to 400g.

Wow you get enough pressure with that? I run this on my 92 gallon and think it needs more. Its not a prusser pump so I feel it lacks? maybe im over doing it.

I had a Red Sea Max 250 which is basically a small tank and used only internal pumps, as my only point of view it would be heat issues, they generally will increase your water temp, IMHO.

You got some great external pumps on your hands there maybe you can consider using them also?

What would add more heat to the tank a submersible pump like the maxijet 5500 or similar or an external Dart?

The internal, for sure, externals don't add heat to the water, also, they run pretty quiet and Reeflo are incredible quality pumps. Good luck :thumbsup:

That question is a very hard question to answer. Will the maxi jet you are guarantied 75w of energy being places into your tank (like having a 75 watt heater always on in the tank). With the dart some of that heat will be dissipated into the air. I guess what I'm trying to say that it would take a significant amout of testing to determin the characteristics of beer transfer to the water.
It's not a direct correlation but I did read and article( advanced aquariest I think) that the max power of a vortech mp40 is 28 watts of which 12 are transferred to the tank(not sure of the exact number but it is close).
