Anyone with trigger experience?

Well lately I have been wanting a Niger Trigger for my tank and am not sure why as I now they may not be reef safe and will most likely eat my snails and crabs in my tank along with the small damsel possibly. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this fish in the past or has had experience with them? I have read on several sites that they can be far less aggressive than other triggers. There is just something about the way they swim that seems so interesting to watch.

The thread seems to be in favor of the pink tail and the sargassum. I have no experience, but from what I have read, experience is ok but will only tell you how your fish acted. This seems to not be a good way to decided how triggers act. Go for the trigger you like the best. Put it in a 90g or bigger FOWLR tank. They have a lot or personality -- maybe not an "other inhabitants" friendly personality, though.

The ****** is great looking!! Most triggers get big also.

I don't think I will have to much of a problem in my 135 if I were to get it small and I want it as small as I can get it. The Sargassum, blue throat and crosshatch( way out of my price range) are all real good looking triggers and seem to be the most "reef" safe. The only thing I worry about is the trigger eating my other fish which include sixline, Sailfin, coral beauty, yellow tail damsel and a blennie that I can't remember the name of.

i guess with fish it is hard to tell I have read everything from the niger is a terror to a model citizen. I have heard that a sixline is a terror too but mine is nothing short of a perfect fish. I suppose I won't know until I put one in my tank. I have my 5g nano to keep my coral fix going!

If anyone has seen any of these triggers around at the lfs let me know.

I have two Niger's and both are model citizens. One is about 3" and in a 60g softy tank, the other is almost 9" and in my 180g mixed reef tank. Neither of them have ever bothered anything. I've had the smaller one for about 3 years and the larger for about a year and a half.

I say go for it.

I am also interested in getting a trigger. I would be housing the fish in a 75 gallon tank. The tank-mates would be 1 Yellow Tang, 1 Solar (Clown) Fairy Wrasse, and 1 Lawnmower Blenny. There are also assorted inverts, 1 small green LTA, and 1 large Long Spine Urchin.


In about a year we will be turning the 75 into a FowLR/aggressive tank, but would like to have a small trigger now that we can just leave in the tank when the switch happens.


My reading/researh leads me to believe that a Niger can be a 50/50 shot with aggression, but a Sargassum seem to be more consistant. I have never seen a Sargassum in a LFS to my knowledge, just Niger and Crosshatch.

I have seen the Niger around here at decent prices and any price I have seen for the crosshatch is crazy expensive. The Sargassum is a good one and a pink tail is also on the list along with a blue chin.

The picture of the Niger with the tangs gives me hope as I have a sailfin and was wondering on how they would get along.

Both of mine get along fine with everything in the tank. I've never had a problem.

Yeah, I traded for that clam about two months ago. It was outgrowing it's previous home. It seems that it's grown a good half inch in the two months that I've had it. At the moment, it's shell is approx 14" from end to end...
