It's not mine, it's in a 550 at a LFS. Saw it on Saturday; this thing is so lazy and just sits in the corner until it thinks there is going to be some food tossed in.

^isn't that a camera angle trick? the puffer looks really close to the camera and the divers further in the background?

That is a real picture. It is the biggest puffer species, Arothron Stellatus, with largest reported size of approximately 48".

I would love to ride one :)

That's nothing. I was at the aquarium on one of the florida keys, and the puffers in their main tank are huge, I mean like length of my arm huge. Also the biggest blue angels I've seen outside the wild.

Stars and Stripes puffers get really big. 18" is no joke when you are as round and bulky as a puffer is. Especially if they get spooked or blow up for some reason.

Mine was about that size when he died(stupid apartment manager!) but even cooler markings imho. Kind of a desert cammo. Here are a couple earlier pictures:

and yes, he just sat around on a ledge all day looking at me. Which was AWESOME! That picture was taken from my computer desk so he sat there looking at me all day long while I worked. Always good for a smile when I glance over. I LOVE puffers...they are THE fish that got me in this blasted expensive hobby of wild emotions.

Nothing like coming out of the shower to find a volleyball ball floating around with the current in your tank:

Currently my dogface is only about six or seven inches...but he's starting to lay around more. Less swimming, more hanging out on a ledge.

Man they really get big when they blow up. Does that ever spook the fish in the tank? I love the markings on that puffer, really neat.

Were they diodon hystrix? Per fish base they have a max size of 91cm.

My bad, I got my aquariums confused. It was actually at the Tennessee Aquarium. I'll have to dig up the pictures.... I'm not that familiar with puffers to know the species name.

When you said the keys thought it might be one of the porcupine puffer species that gets ridiculously big. Curious to see what they are if you can find the pictures.

My porc is about 10" and my s&s is about 8" they're great. So much personality

Awesome...read your original post. I wonder how long they have been together? Maybe the fact that the porc is bigger helps the situation.

My S & S was having nothing to do with another dogface(maybe too similar?) in his tank.

Love the puffers, what happened that caused the death of your stars and stripes?

My wife was having major surgery and I flew to another state to be there for it.

While I was gone my brilliant apt manager decided to re-paint my entire place(without asking) using KILLZ first and then regular paint. Of course they didn't open any windows to ventilate and by the time I got back all my fish were dead except for the puffer who stayed alive just long enough to see me get back and say goodbye. He died the next day.

Needless to say there was a lawsuit that I won. And when I moved out I left "carlito" in the freezer for the apt manager to find and hopefully feel bad about.

She was a nice lady but not very smart. She was like "I don't understand how anything in the air can get in your tank water. The fish are underwater, how can they breath the air?"
