So anyone have a zoa/paly question that actually takes thought?

How about a compatibility question? I have a couple of BTAs, 1 softie (Metallic Orange Mushroom), 1 LPS (Candy Cane) and 1 Maxima clam in my 125gal now without any fish bigger or more dangerous to reefs than my bicolor blennie (no triggers, angels, or even a tang).

I would like to get zoas in the near future. Do they tend to fight or overgrow softies or LPS meaning I'll be limited with future choices? I've read that they can spread rapidly.

Zoanthids will indeed profilerate exponentially in optimal conditions. That said, if one person answers your question as it relates to your 4 part question, then the thread is dead. So, I tackle one and someone else can contribute to the others.

1. The Maxima Clam - yes, they will grow onto and cover the shell if placed in close proximity of said clam. I have seen it in person. Looks kind of cool, like a decorator crab walking around with a back full of zoanthid polyps.http://youtu.be/V58_JpNFP_o I would take every precaution though not to allow this to happen as the clam will be irritated when the polyp will eventually prevent them from expanding thus showcasing their stunning mantle. So keep them away from the clam.

Depending on the type of mushroom (shroom) yes they can spread faster than an std in college.

They will "choke out" or "shade out" zoas. Have to remember also the bigger the tank the room for error. As well as the heavier the bio load, the corals have to fight for the proper nutrients to survive.

I am setting up a 45 gallon shallow zoa tank and got a 40 breeder sump.

My options are using either a 8" reef octopus skimmer with live rock in the sump or using the sump as a fuge.

With the skimmer and rock I will have to use more power than just lighting the fuge. If I use the fuge there will be better ph stability and more pods, plus less power. But I will have to put a little more rock in the display which I did not want to do. I wanted to have only one or two small nice looking rocks in the display. I think these are my best two options but I am putting this tank up for my girlfriend and am new to zoas so if anyone wants to chip in go right ahead!

Your case is really about the skimmer, not sump.
I would have the skimmer and forget about the fuge.

I mean you can plump the 40 gallon and use as sump.
Or always just get a HOB skimmer and put it on 45 shallow tank.
Save plumbing funds to buy more coral/skimmer :smokin:

I run a 37 with no filter or skimmer. Contents are lps carpet and zoas.
I'm just up on water changes and limit feeding.

I believe the bubble tip anemone can take care of the zoas if it is healthy because they have stronger nematocysts than zoas. The candy cane coral may have trouble with the zoas because their nematocysts are on the top of the coral itself, not where the zoas will be growing. The mushrooms will shade over the zoas and beat them by shading them out. This is what I have experienced in my tanks HTH.
