When I run my small frag tank, I ran carbon 24/7 to combat the chemical warfare since I keep a variety of corals. I keep a couple of pieces of live rock for bio-filtration and fed the corals three times a week (Reef Roids or Reef Chili). Water flow and lighting are the two biggest factors when it comes to coral growth (assuming you keep your water chemistry stable).
