Apartment RO/DI

I am soon moving into a 2 storey townhouse with neighbours around and below me. I have the pro BRS RO/DI set up that has just arrived. In my detached home, I had it set up under the sink with a couple garbage cans, float valves, emergency drain...basically totally automated in the basement but that is not going to happen in my new place due to space and flood issues.

Show me what you do in your condo/apartment for water. I can make do with filling buckets up individually but I would rather not have to lug it out everytime I want to use it.

Install it under your sink in your kitchen or bathroom. Put your fill line into your container via the float switch and you should be good.

I did this long ago before I bought my house and had no issues. I lived on the third floor of my apartment at that time.

When I was in my apartment I had the RO/DI hooked up under the sink. I ran a long tubing line to a brute can in the closet nearby. I made a rule that I would NEVER turn on the water without turning on a timer FIRST.

I'd still go under the sink for convenience. I'd suggest a vertical water storage barrel, you can find 100 gallon barrels that use very little floor space. Put a float valve in the barrel, and use 1/4" plastic water line to connect it to the RO/DI.

On the output of the RO, put a John Guest valve, a small section of hose, and another valve connected to the hose on your tank float valve. This way once the tank is full you close both valves and separate the small section between the two valves. The RO stays off because the pressure on the shut off solenoid remains, water doesn't drain out the long line to the reservoir, you coil up the feed line until you need it again, and you have a good amount of water available in a little space.

I did this from a bathroom to the spare bedroom closet in our apartment for 5 years. No floods.

best of luck.

How much water do you need to make at once? Tanks in apartments usually aren't that big.

I would put it under the bathroom sink. Get a few buckets and mount a float valve and a tiny air hole in one of the lids. Whenever you need water put the buckets in the bathtub, uncoil the RODI line from under the sink and put it onto the lid/float valve. Check it after a couple hours and if it's full move the lid to the next bucket and so on.

This way you won't waste water if you forget all about it or decide to leave the house, plus if the float valve fails it will overflow into the bathtub so there's no water damage.

The aquarium will hold approximately 30 gallons. I think I will go with the under cabinet mount and line to buckets in bathtub for a failsafe drain. I don't think any storage containers are in my future.

Fair enough, you have a plan. Where will you store the
full and empty buckets?

How much space do they need?
