Apex and Mac

Recently purchased an Apex Lite controller and I'm having difficulties.

I've read the new user guide several times. I'm not that computer savy, but willing to learn. Also did multiple searches on here and you tube without much success.

I have everything hooked up properly. Status lights are green on the hub and energy bar 8. Ethernet light is green and yellow/orange is on as well.

I'm wired directly into my ethernet, not using wireless or going through a router.

I cannot access anything on my controller. I guess I need a step by step guide for the MAC. The new user guide is primarily for Windows users.

Any suggestions?

By default the Apex will try to acquire an IP address using DHCP so either a router or some other device acting as a DHCP server would be required. If you are trying to connect directly (Not using an Ethernet Hub or Switch) to it via ethernet you would need to give the Apex a static IP address and then give your Mac a static IP address on the same subnet.

To setup a static IP on the Apex you would use the ApexFlash utility.

This example assumes you are connecting your Ethernet port on the Mac directly to the Apex Ethernet port. You should not need a cross over cable since the Mac is capable of detecting the need for cross over.

Example
To setup the Apex
Using the ApexFlash utility edit the IP address.
Click the Search button (to the right of the "-" button lower left)
Select the controller it finds
Select the controller in the left pane
Click the Gear button drop down and select Edit

IP address: 192.168.1.2
Port: 80

On the Mac
System Preferences
-> Ethernet
-> Advanced
-> Configure IPv4 = Manually
-> IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.1
-> Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
-> Router: 192.168.1.2

You should now be able to open a web browser and go to
http://192.168.1.2

Let me know if you need more info

No dice.

When I use the flash utility, it never finds my controller.
Here are my settings:
DHCP is ON
IP 192.168.1.2
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway is same as IP
DNS server 10.0.1.1

my ethernet cord goes from aqua controller hub directly into my ethernet port in the wall. all the lights are on, etc. Still no luck

That wall jack has to have copper wiring behind it if the network cable from the Apex plugs into it That cabling goes somewhere. And there must be something that connects between the copper wiring and the fiber optic cabling. There also should be a router somewhere - what device connects everything to the Internet connection?

The IP address of your Mac implies to me that there is an Apple Airport router somewhere in the picture.

So the ethernet cable comes out of the wall and plugs into the apple airport router; I was unplugging the ethernet cable and plugging in the apex ethernet cable directly into the wall bypassing the router. I was trying to set it up first, then transition to a wireless connection as the instruction manual tells you to

Ok it sounds like you are talking about two wall jacks - one near the Apex and one near the router. Is this right?

So if I understand your network topology (specifically, the path between the Apex and the Mac), it's like this:

Apex<->wallplate<->wallplate<->AirPort router<->Mac

  1. Make sure that the Mac is not on the guest wireless if that feature is enabled in the Airport.
  2. Using the display menus, verify that the Apex has DHCP enabled
  3. Reboot the Apex
  4. Wait 45 seconds or so for it to come back up
  5. Using the display menu, look up the Apex's IP address and other network settings. It should come up with:

  • IP address of 10.0.1.X (the last part will probably be a low number 2-10)
  • subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
  • default gateway of 10.0.1.1
  • DNS server of 10.0.1.1
If all this matches up with what your Apex shows, use your preferred web browser on your Mac, and go to http://10.0.1.X (the actual IP address of the Apex), and see what happens.

Let us know what you find...
