waz up REEFERs. I have been thinking a lot about the apex system and wanted to know how many of yall have one and what is all yall do with it... I want to buy a system but don't know what to get. and mayb someone can show me the way. I really just want to control my lights to what ppl now days call sun up/ sun down as making the lights brighter or less. I have seen the systems online and they have all kinds of them. like the jr or lite and the big $800. one.......:deadhorse1: my thank is a 150gal long with 3 Reef Radiance coral pro that now can be control by a apex, a aqua euro usa 400 skimmer, heater and return. not much but I like it. so reefers let me know what apex do I need.

Well you can ramp up and down lighting. You would need a full apex for that. As apex light does not have a vdm port. (Variable dimming module) the full apex has it built in. I think any full apex will work perfect you don't really need pharmaceutical ph probe. Apex can keep and eye on Temps and ph and alert if something is wrong. You would also want a break out box. As you can hook up pumps and switches for ato. You can hook up dosing pumps and dose with the apex. You can do AWC so you don't have to do manual water changes. Really apex can do it all. Now with the new update you can even keep track of your water parameters. (Calcium, alk, nitrate and ect

The apex has more availability to expand in the furure than the jr.
I love my apex gold but not sure if I wil ever use it to its full potential.

We have full Apex and I often feeling like I am using a microwave to heat coffee. Based on what you want the controller to do one of the most important components you will want is the EB8. We are using 7/8 outlets and don't have that complex of a tank.

It's all about control ;)

I have a similar tank to yours. You are welcome to stop by, I'd be happy to show my tank and apex setup.

I have the apex light, WXM, VDM, PM2, ALD, 2x eb8, 2x eb4 and breakout box. I use my apex to control 2 part dosing, methanol denitrater, Auto top off, Auto water change system, salt mixing station, MP40s, LED dimming, leak detection, overflow prevention, skimmer delay. It also keeps track of test results and produces graphs (ALK, Ca, Mg, PO4, NO3, Sr, K, I..etc) I even use it to keep track of scheduled maint items (sodalime, GFO, Pump cleaning, UV light...etc. Also, the apex will send me text/email when there is a problem; I love the peace of mind it gives me.

PS - no I dont work for neptune ;)

My name is Dave and I am an apex junky :crazy1:

that would me great. we can meet up on the weekend or something. wow man thanks.:eek2::eek2:

Tony- I started with a very simple controller I bought used and worked my way up over the years. Any controller will give you what you are asking for. Not everyone can afford the big apex.

I was not aware that the "Jr" coudnt get the vdm added, Jonny above says you cant.

All that being said, they really do provide peace of mind, and the things you can do with an Apex are endless. We are not all Apex Junkies like Dr. T but even in its simplicity it can add a lot of benefits.

thanks eddie. im going to be doin lots of home work on this APEX system in the next few weeks. for right now I think that the lite will be a better way to go.

Any controller is better than none. Neptune does appear to be the leader in the industry right now though.

Dave when you used your apex to Control your Christmas light I knew you had a control problem LMAO

And yes you can hook up a vdm module but it cost like $90. The light comes with a eb4 and not a eb8 so you are really limited when you only have 4 outlets. It alsi does not come with ph probe and that would be another module. I am cheap as they come with reefing but after doing math it makes since to go with a full apex unit.

Good info, and homework Jonny, that makes sence. thank you.

I try to make the best I can with out the HIGH $$$$$ on reefing. but if I know im getting a good deal then im all for it. thanks guys for all the info. I think that the APEX lite would do for wat I need.

Because you want to use the dimmer functions of a vdm. I'd recommend getting the full apex. Watch the classifieds section. I've seen full apex setups go for $400.
You're going to have to get a separate vdm module if you go with a Lite.

Once you get it and get used to the apex, you'll start thinking of things to do like setting up alarms, using fusion, and more.

Oh and count me in the apex club too :)

LOL Funny you started this thread as I was in the same boat and ready to pop the question. Does the Junior APEX come with the eb8 or the 4?
