Apex Learning Curve Please Help

I'm sure it is on here someplace but I just cant find it. This is my problem: I just purchased a new apex and I am one of those that just didnt have the luck of just plugging it in to the router and it working. I have 2 different ways to get to the either net, first is through my vonyage router for my phone and cable and the other is my netgear wireless router, I have tried both and still can not get to http://apex. I am a very dumb person when it comes to computers. I'm sure it is something stupid but I can figure it out. Thanks in advance.

Choose 1 connection and let's work through that (rather than trying > 1 and getting lost or confused).

The direct connection to the router should work right away. The Apex should boot and get an address from the router (assuming the router has DNS enabled which most do).

Try plugging in the Apex and verify you get some blinking lights on the Ethernet port of the Apex (the router may also have some status light to indicate an active device on the port). These will let you know you have a good connection. Next open a cmd prompt and type "ping Apex"; this will test if the Apex was successful in getting an address from the router.

Report back and we can go from there. Note; as you have tried a couple things you might have some bogus address items in the cache, easiest way to clear them is to reboot the PC.

I will let you know later on this evening. I will give it a try around 4ish. I also picked up a wireless adapter if that makes things easier. Thanks

Ken OK I hooked up the Apex to the router and a green and yellow light was on on the apex. I did the command prompt ping apex and it came back not found. What should I do next. Thanks

That is an indication that the router either isn't configured to hand out addresses or does not understand WINS (the 'thing' that publishes the name as Apex).

Go into the Setup, Network Setup menu on the Apex and see if DHCP is on or off; if it is 'off' turn it on and then reset the Apex and it should get an address. If it is already on then you might be dealing with router configuration and it might be easier to configure the Apex for a static address (also using setup->Network Setup; but with DHCP Off and setting the address manually).

What router are you using? If DHCP is set then the Apex should get an address from the router.

The one thing about the router is my brother set it up on his computer and I dont have the cd to it. Do I need to purchase a new router. I did try to set up the adapter today with no success, it wouldnt find the router. Should I return the adapter and pick up a new router?

That router should should be fine to use. First, let's get some info about the settings on your Apex & PC... that will tell us quite a bit.

In the NetSetup menu of the Apex, look up:

IP Address
NetMask
Gateway Address

Post the values here.

I'm assuming you have a Windows PC. On the PC, open a command prompt (Start->Run, type CMD, then press ENTER). Type in ipconfig then press ENTER. A screen of info will be displayed. Post the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.

ok this is what I have
Apex
IP 192.
Net 255.
Gate 192.

ipconfig is
IP 192.
Mask 255.
Gate 192.

The adapter I got is a Linksys n ultra range plus.

Russ, the controller is set for DHCP Enabled.

ok this is what I have
Apex
IP 192.168.1.4
Net 255.255.255.0
Gate 192.168.1.1

ipconfig is
IP 192.168.1.5
Mask 255.255.255.0
Gate 192.168.1.1

Assuming the address is what DHCP allocated to the Apex try this:

http://192.168.1.4

See if you get prompted for password.

Did you try the Apex user and password? admin and 1234?

Both me and Russ have the same links; they should either both work or both fail but since you have 1 working see if you can connect now.

Try username of 'admin' and password of '1234' Or, if you've changed the default using the Apex menu, use whatever you entered.

If that lets you into the Apex web pages, go to the Configuration=>Network Setup page and see what's in the hostname field. If it's something other than 'apex', type that name into a new browser window.

Ken and Russ I have logged into the page and everything is working with charts, controls, ect. I want to thank the 2 of you for your help. Do I need to do anything else. Ken you had mentioned that I may need to create my own address. I have to work at the firedepartment in the morning so I will be unable to do anything with the computer until thrusday night. Once again thank you 2 for all the help
