I believe you have to register a GMX email account for that to work.. I use my own email address and it works just fine... its like sending yourself an email.
This means that the default gateway or DNS Server setting in the Apex is incorrect. But since it sounds like you have external access working, that tells me that the default gateway is probably correct. So focus on the DNS.
The DNS servers should be set - in most cases - to the same IP address as the default gateway. Or you can just use a reliable public DNS server like Google DNS... set the DNS servers in the Apex to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Update settings, reboot the Apex, then try again.
