Apolemichthys arcuatus

Awesome Peter!

How deep do you think he was, and do you remember the water being unusually cool.

~Michael

I wasn't deep at all. 10ft max. Not sure about water temp. It was RIGHT off shore though., Just lots of round rocks with no coral on them, if memory serves.

Here is the first bandit that I received about three years ago. I got this fish from Rob.

Here she was right after Rob caught her:

i keep mine between 23.5-25 celsius a bit on the warm side but it seems very happy

Beautiful fish, I was just checking one out on the PIA website. Are these guys supposed to be kept in cooler water tanks?

Brett- Personally I would not keep a Bandit Angel in water temps over 75 for any extended period of time. I like to keep my tank between 68-72 depending on the time of the year.

I'd for sure buy one if I could be confident that it would do well! As a sensitive fish, I'd want to be 100% confident that it was handled as best as possible.

I wonder how many of the failures are as a result of temperature and stress in transportation.

I believe that some of the bandits that are collected have decompression issues, and this leads to other problems and eventually death. Also, so many of the larger Bandit Angelfish that are collected just do not do well. I believe that the large breeding adults are so set in their ways(sponge/tunicate eating, etc.), that once collected they just cant adjust to captive diets and aquarium life. Couple this with the temperature issues and transportation stress that David mentioned and you are destined to fail.

But there are great collectors out there who seek out the smaller juveniles and young adults and take the time to properly decompress the fish and get them shipped out properly. These specimens tend to do quite well if kept in the proper environment (temp, feeding, lighting, etc.), and are very rewarding to keep.

-They are well worth the price.

We have a 1.5" juvenile that immediately after collection ate mysis and pellets.. only problem is you have to feed the babies 4-5 times a day... which we are doing... lol

Definitely one of my favorite fish (especially the skunk ones!)

They do great if collected properly which is evident almost instantly.
