Well i never really appreciated my tunze nano skimmer (9002) until now (i've had it for about a year). Before i just ignored it, if it skimmed, it skimmed, if it didnt, it didnt, i didnt bother adjusting it or anything (too lazy).

Well out of the blue i decided to make it work, i did some adjustments, got it working REALLY well and its amazing. I get a full cup of some mildly dark skimmate in about 5 days on a 20 gallon tank that doesnt have too much of a bioload and only gets fed once every other day.

Its amazing how such a small skimmer can make such good skimmate in a small tank.

Oh and props to you guys with the auto top off as well, works great, plus the pump that comes with it works great as well.

So if you don't mind sharing how did you tweak it to get it to skim better? I am a new nano skimmer user and not sure how to set it the most efficient although it does work like a champ but seems like some days it skims more than others but I think it's my fluctuating water levels since I don't have an Osmolater yet for autotopoffs.

by tweaking i just meant adjusting the blue screw for the air intake, not actual mods. I feel it doesnt need any mods to make it work better, and i dont see how a mod could be done except a drain on the skimmer cup.

Steady water level REALLY helps.

My water level is a bit higher than the recommended level on the skimmer, i find it works better this way for my system. You could try it i guess.

As you can tell by that video i skim very wet, and get a light-medium skimmate. But i can make it darker if i wanted to.

Here are some cup shots:

1 Weeks worth of skimmate

About a day or twos worth of skimmate

That's a lot more than I get on a 24 Aquapod. I have a medium bioload and I have never been able to get this thing to work that well. I originally had mine installed like yours, way down in the water and it did just 'OK'. I've also had it at the water line with no improvement. Now I keep reading suggestions of putting it where it is installed .5" above the water line so I'm trying that now. I just don't know what else to do. I don't think I'm expecting too much from this little guy - just to skim. Your skimmate also runs higher in the reaction chamber and is more 'frothy' than mine. If I run mine that high in the chamber it's too wet to really do anything.

Mine will also stop working for a couple of hours when I feed the tank. Every other skimmer that I've had (Remora, Coralife) even the Seaclone would pick up skimming when I fed the tank. I must be doing something wrong.

Mushu, when you refer to the blue screw on the air intake....are you restricting the air intake and getting a better skimmate? Was it too wet before or did it just not produce any mung? Just always curious what is working for others, :)

wolf,

Not to jump on your question, but the higher you run the reaction chamber (the height of the foam reaction) the wetter the skimming will be (produces a lighter color skimmate). I've ran mine both wet and drier (I say drier because I'm not sure this skimmer can produce anything that dry) and seem to get better results running wet.
