not the gypsy moth one. the guy i would have been replacing just got his phd in CS and was doing the bulk of the interviewing and he seemed to be totally out to get me and make me look bad in front of the other guys just because i didn't have a real CS degree and didn't know all the buzzwords and esoteric software engineering models. stuff that matters on big programs written by teams of dozens of programmers like the next version of Office, but not a little data collection program that has at most 30 pages of code. didn't matter that i had been doing pretty much the exact same thing for the past 13 years except for counting and measuring trees instead of just gypsy moth trap counts (which is a million times simpler), and not even counting that i still feel my experience with dealing with field technicians (they suck at computers) and writing software they can understand/training/supporting is way more important than writing a program that is 2.3% more efficient.
but i did just get a well paying part-time job with the department of forestry that starts this week (i applied for it back in january but was no-go back then due to state-wide hiring freeze, and it just now popped up outta nowhere) and another part-time job lined up with tetra (thanks vetdog) that starts at the end of the month doing after hours customer support. i'll do both from home, and i'll still keep doing my current job (just sold a whole bunch of copies to canada, which is good in itself and it'll hopefully spread to other companies up there that want to get in on the exchange rate) so i should be able to start digging myself out of the hole.
