aptasia laser killer

I am playing around with the idea of buying a laser for aptasia killing. It seems like the only downside other than the price is the blind yourself thing. There are safety goggles but I am a little nervous still. Anyone have any experience? Initially I though I could loan or rent it out but the liability would be too great.

There just happens to be a post in the reef discussion forum today about lasers. May be the answers your looking for.

The kind of laser you need (1.2W or greater) is not sold assembled in the U.S. anymore. You will need to buy a kit and a diode. Read up on it at Laser Pointer Forums. I dealt with DTR (in the Pro Shop buy /sell forum) and a host assembly from Survival lasers.

Any questions - PM me.

Hey Brett. I am absolutely interested in trying one of those lasers out on the mushroom plague in my tank...but I'm also a bit nervous about the idea of permanent eye damage. I hate the mushrooms in my tank, but I like not being blind more than I hate the shrooms.

Anyway, let me know if you get one.

This is exactly why we need a club so the club can buy these things and then loan them to members. Use at your own risk naturally. But I agree that seems like a better way than the seringe and vinegar!

Lets do it, I think all the anti club guys are gone now.

That's funny, my same thoughts on aptasia. I have heard of them before and I saw this on the forum http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2257148 this a.m. and it got me thinking again. I wonder if it would work on a lot of different hassles. Aptasia, majano, gha, out of control corals, ect.

For a long time any thoughts of a club got shot down pretty quick due to some past issues. If your serious though, start a thread and let's see how much interest there is.

If there is fear of blinding yourself, what about the light reflecting around and blinding your fish?

Makes 'em easier to catch! :spin2:

Don't point it at your face or a mirror, wear some protective eye-wear (cheap and avail at Praxair on S Park, or any good welding supply). Good to go!
