Aqua C vs. Bermuda

I'm trying to find a new skimmer for my 220 FOWLR, I have a few messy eaters, and am only about half stocked right now, with more messy eaters to come

was looking at maybe either a bermuda or aqua c ??

Skimmer I have now I guess isn't doing what I want it to...it may be oversized I'm not sure, but after a year, I still can't get it to skim much. And my nitrates are 40 even after dosing sugar for awhile

Thanx

Bermuda is really quick when it comes to responding to your needs. In the beginning not so much as, I think, they were still getting established and pretty busy I'm assuming. Now they're pretty good with their service. I needed a part for my skimmer, contacted them and without hesitating they shipped me the part.

I have not used the Aqua Cs but several of my buddies switched from the Aqua's to Bermuda and they love it. I own the smallest Bermuda on my 55 gal right now and it's working wonders!

thanx for the responce, I'm trying to decide between the 2...and I guess both would be fine. But just wondered what people thought, I don't know anyone local to me that has either one.

Thanx again

I had both and the Bermuda is far and above the better skimmer. I still have my Aqua C EV-180 laying around and will most likely try to sell it. The Aqua C never really got cranking for me on my old 90. I used a mag 9.5, and still it wouldn't foam much. I have a Bermuda 5C on my 180 with a Mag 12 and it skims about 1/2 gallon every two days or so of moderate smelly brown skimmate. There is a guy selling an 8C w/ a mag 18 on the Equipment forum. I am not sure if a 5C or 8C would be better for a heavily stocked 220 fowler.

Hope this helps.

FWIW, my Aqua-c EV 180 worked great with an IWAKI pump plumed external. Due to a tank/sump upgrade I went to in sump and a Mag-7 as recommended by Aqua-c site; and I hate the way it works now. The skimmer needs a pressure pump to work well I guess. I'm thinking of getting rid of it when i can afford an upgrade.

I just recently set-up a 90gal reef and have the AquaC EV-180. I couldn't be happier. It skims like a banshee and was very easy to dial-in. I am running it with an over-sized pump (Mag 9.5 v. Mag7). I honestly can't imagine a skimmer working better unless maybe it emptied itself.

I have found that if you run low salinity levels like 1.021-1.023. Not NSW 1.026 or so that the aqau C skims dry and you may need to run a stronger than recommended pump.

When I raised it to 1.026sg. I now have to have my skimmer backed off about 10% and it is making about 5 measuring cups of medium colored skimmate per day now.:)

Mine's a reef with 1.026 sg. It may just be the mag-7. Like I said the IWAKI ran great, but I no longer have room for it.

I have an Aqua C EV-150 and I love the thing. I can put my arm or food in the tank and it won't stop skimming. I think it also has a lot to do with your water. I switched from IO to Kent and my skimmer used to stop foaming for an hour or so after feeding. But with the Kent salt, it never stops.

That being said, I've heard that tanks running at EV series skimmer with frequent and large feedings don't mix very well. There is a very very long thread in this forum somewhere called "Aqua C Club" or something similar that has tons of info and pretty much every problem you will encounter...if you are patient enough to read through it.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with the Bermuda skimmers, so my opinion is probably somewhat biased.

Couldn't resist throwing this up here. I would like to see a Bermuda pic because I have no idea what they look like.

This is roughly 18 hours worth...

I use an oversized pump (mag 7) with an older version EV120 & couldn't be happier. I put a ball valve on the pump which gives me a lot more control. If I want dry skimmate, I reduce the pump flow & raise the water level in the skimmer. For wet skimmate, I let the pump go on full & open the skimmer gate valve wide open.

I have both - EV-120 and Bermuda 3C. Both work good, but the Bermuda does a better job overall and is less susceptable to water surface tension changes.

Bermuda is not as well known as they only sell through dealers, but the unit is rock solid.
