There any opinions on the Aqua Medic Nanowave 9? I am getting one for christmas..it's under the tree...
I know they are brand new but does anyone have any feedback?

My gf bought me one for xmas and it's sitting under the tree as well lol... we have a very popular marine store near my house (marine scence) and they had this one, the biocubes, and aquapods for sale.

I talked to several staff and they all pointed me towards the Aqua Medic one. I liked it as well for the fuge light and the modular compartments in the back.

One thing I failed to notice however, I don't think this system comes with built in fans? Not sure, I have not opened it yet, but I didn't see anything on the outside of the box. Kinda worried about that.

I'll post any info I find once I open it up on xmas.

i cant belive how much thought went into designing this tank and they totally disregarded the idea of a fan in the hood

I'm sure it is vented well, I doubt AquaMedic would make such a serious design flaw. Unlike fans, convection is quiet and reliable. We will see, I ordered one last night for my son.

How are things at my old haunt Marine Scene? I left the DC Area in 2000. I bet it has grown a lot.

i beleive it does not heat up too much but no light mods i have one in my car that im setting up for my girlfriends sister for christmas i plan on putting two baby clows and a fire shrimp
i will take her clowns when they outgrow the tank

Marine Scene has definitely changed a lot since I started going to it years ago. The staff is still good.. Mike, Sean and Tom I know well. Some are so so I guess.

The store itself is pretty decent most of the time. Still very high prices, but great if you want something to get in person. Loudon county has grown a ton.

I can imagine... they were looking for part-time people before and I almost applied.. but I live an hour away so it wouldn't work out.. but everytime I go I spend like an hour there. Not that I would be hired but hey lol.

I worked there for almost three years and lived in Alexandria, a long trek on the Fairfax County Parkway.

Hi Everyone,

I just thought I would add my .02 on this. I received one of these about 2 weeks ago and thought it would be fun to try and have it up and running for the holidays. However my initial excitement about this tank has decreased considerably. There are a few major problems that I have noticed on it. Some can probably be fixed with some DIY modifications but as I already have water in mine it may be too late for some of those for me. I have heard alot of the "shipping disasters" that happened with the JBJ, Aquapod, and Finnex tanks but mine came packed in 4 separate boxes, so it arrived in pristine condition.

First off the biggest concern I have with the tank is the overflow... there isn't one. The water flows into the skimmer department of the tank by to small grids that I can post some pics of... if I can figure out how. The grids are about 3 inches below the water line and about 4 inches above the bottom of the tank. So anything that actually floats to the surface... has to be scooped out by hand.

My second problem I have at the moment is with the way the lid closes on the tank. If you fill the tank with enough water that you hide the water line with the half in or so plastic border at the top of the tank... when you close the lid the plastic cover for the PC lights actually sits in the water. Also the ventilation is horrible... the lights get really hot. After having the lights on for 8 hours the lid is uncomfortable to touch.

Oddly enough the third problem I am having is with heat... I cant seem to get the tank above 74.1 deg. The temp in the room my tank is in, generally is around 65 to 70. I have a 50w Jager heater in one of the back compartments but the flow is so restricted that the heater only heats that little compartment, then promptly turns off. I moved the heater to the display and it heats just fine. However I would like to avoid this, the display really is small and a 9" heater detracts greatly.

There are few more issues I am having with this tank but I wont post them all atm. Overall I am pleased with the tank but I do think the overall design was extremely poor.

I would probably rate this tank a 6/10 atm. If you guys have any questions about what I mean feel free to ask. I will see if I can get some pics taken and try to figure out how to post them here for you.

Thal,

Thank you very much for your input. Any and ALL is very much appreciated by me. I have not decided if I am going to return this tank yet or not.

Please keep us posted.

Won't the heater fit in the compartment where the return pump is, or is that where you had it? Now that the tank is up to temperature, how does it ventilate? Heat must not be a problem if you couldn't get it above 74 even after the lights were on for 8 hours.
Is the fuge light controlled separately, or just all on all off? Thanks, I appreciate all the info because I will never actually see the tank, I will have to walk my son through the set up over the phone, he lives in Cali.

The heater fits just fine in the compartment with the return pump, but it may just be that area is so small that it heats up really fast then turns off the heater. The entire return area is maybe 2" by 3"
The tank overheating does not have me worried to much during winter but it may be an issue later in the year.
The Fuge lights are controled seperately, seperate power cord and seperate switch on the back of the lid. The Moonlights and PC's are on the same power cord but have seperate switches on the top of the lid. The lights are ventilated through several small slats on the side of the canopy, no fans.

As far as the PC's themselves go, the tank comes with one "blue" 24w, and one 6400K PC, maybe you guys can help me with this but I am trying to find someone that carries at least a 10000k 24w but I have not been able to locate someone that sells them.

Also this is my first time using a skimmer and the one on this tank is extremly loud. I dont really know too much about them so trying to play around with it I have managed to get much better skimmate, however noise is pretty constant.
What I am actually going to do with this ... I think anyway... I saw a decent sized canister filter on ebay and I will most likely scrap the skimmer, and everything in the back of the tank (a compartment for a sponge, and another for the bio ball wannabe's) except for the fuge part and try and hook the canister filter up as a "inline sump" with rock rubble in it. Maybe run some carbon or something as well.

I did manage to take a bunch of pictures this morning before work, I will see if I can post some of them so you can see what I mean about the intake area and lights touching the water.

(btw, sorry for the grammar and spelling errors I typed this while on the phone with a customer)

Don't scrap the skimmer, just attach an air stone onto the airline as a muffler, this works really well. A skimmer is a must IMO, especially in such a small tank. If the tank doesn't have surface skimming the skimmer will really help in oxygenating the water and in keeping the ph up, not to mention all the DOCs it will remove.

Hmm I never thought about putting something on as a muffler, I will see if I can get it to work. I was just thinking about doing a small water change every two or three days.

Any thoughts on what else I may be able to do to keep the water temp up? I would really like to not have the heater in the display.

I can't believe the temp won't stay up with 125gph going through the back compartment. I would think the heater would cycle on and off in that small space, but the heated water should flow into the display fairly quickly. Where does the heat go?

I upgraded the pump today to a Rio I had from my old Q. tank, so the flow should be around 210 gph. Then went out xmas shopping and came back several hours later and the temp seems to be holding at 79.2. We will see what happenes when I turn off the lights tonight. I currently have the heater temp set at 90.
