Aquabacs' Cadlights Artisan 50 Azooxanthellae Tank build

"it is taking 1 cup of HC GFO from Bulk Reef Supply every 5 days"
Meaning you're still using this much GFO or that you haven't had to use as much GFO with the pellets?
Gary

Gary, the volume of GFO has not changed while using the pellets. Pellets or not it is a cup every 5 days. I have not been able to reduce the GFO yet. I also have not started to dose LC.

Mike

Sounds like I'd better increase my GFO use. I'm not using nearly that much nearly as often. You're clearly using a lot because BRS is out of stock almost across the board. ;)
Gary

When I test the effluent coming out of the reactor it takes about 5 days before the GFO needs to be changed. Some weeks I can hold out six days but the majority of the time only five. When I order GFO, I try to buy the largest container I can from BRS. Unfortunately, I have to get the reagents for my Hanna tester from a different source, but TB does not mind ;)

Following your lead. Started tonight. More GFO more often. Phosphate reduction is happening as I type.

Why haven't you experimented with LC? Seems like a better solution if you're careful about the dosing. Haven't looked for a source, though.
Gary

Gary, I just need to get hold of 10 micron filter socks. My only real concern is with my crinoids. Honestly, I have not found anyone using it with crinoids in their systems. My only concern is wiping them all out. After talking with Joe Y, I think I can do it safely. I still need to get hold of Moe in regards to his opinion on longterm use of GFO with possible breeding of crinoids. I have been trying to find out the specifics of his system of breeding urchins.

Breeding crinoids would be quite a feat. Hope you can work it out. I had an exciting moment last night when I discovered that there is a squat lobster living in my crinoid. I need to get a couple more crinoids. They are incredible animals.
Gary

Gary, once you get hooked be warned, they are beyond addicting! I love my non-photosynthetic corals but I love my crinoids even more. They are amazing animals but well worth the heart ache of keeping them.

Oh, I'm more than hooked and it's SaraB's fault for pushing me over the cliff. ;)

How is LC dosed? passively, hence the bag?

Gary

The LC is diluted in RO/DI water and dosed directly into a 10 micron filter sock. It comes out to 1ml of LC into a gallon of RO for a 50 gallon tank. The mix should last a week. Compared to GFO the LC should cost pennies. Just need to have enough filter socks to rotate while dosing.

Yes, she's selling her tank and setting up a "smaller" tank that will take up less of her time. She picked up the new tank this weekend so the switchover will begin soon.

Glad to hear that the azoox site project is still alive. I'd written it off. If I can help . . .

Gary

Well they should certainly be using your photos for the banners! Look forward to the site finally going up.

I like the LC dosing idea. I think mariusz used that method with great success.

Thanks Uhuru for the photo compliment.

Who sells LC, in what form is it available (liquid, powder, granules), and why is a 10 micron bag needed for dosing. I would much rather go that route than deal with GFO. From what I've read, it's also a more effective means of phosphate removal, assuming you carefully control the dosing.

Gary

Oh! one more thing...the azoox forum is being worked on...so dont worry...the project isnt dead ;)

Mike

Chuck tossed in the Towel on waiting for something to happen with azoox and his tank. As of yesterday he said he's done with the run around and is moving his hobby interest into exotic birds.

Tried to talk him out of it but I can feel his pain as well.

Gary, it comes in liquid form and you can get a 32 ounce bottle for around 40 from Aquaticeco dot com. It also would be enough for a few years worth of phosphate control. Bang for the buck, there is little that comes close to it, even with the regeneration of GFO.

Sorry to hear about Chuck. I can only imagine what he is going to do with birds...something along the theme of his back yard? Hear it is pretty wild.
