AquaC CLUB!

I have a 240 I will be hooking up in the near future.

I have yet to decide on a pump. I will be running the pump external.

What brand do you all suggest?

My choices are ..........

Pan world
Poseidon
Mag 18
GenX

I really don't want to run a mag externally. But it seems like the preferred pump everyone is using here for the 240. I am leaning toward the Pan World or Poseidon.

My main concern is added heat to the system and noise.

This very long thread has been very helpful and sure to save a few headaches.

My needle valve is on the way. Silencer for the air intake will be made. Any other suggestions are welcome to quiet the skimming process down.

Well I got a 240 and have the mag 18 externally. the only thing is to put it on a board like a 1X4 or 1X6 and clamp it down so it wont have a chance to move it dont take much to crack the housing. and I bet that is why you arnt too wanting to use the mag.
 
Panworld 100px should rock that skimmer.

I noticed that here the pumps listed last for the 240 and larger models seem to be spot on if you want the most powerful pump. Sometimes the Panworlds specs are better than the Iwakis. So if they recommend an Iwaki, check and compare the Iwaki to the Panworld specs. If better, why not. They are cheaper than Iwaki too.

I want to note, that I havn't used a ev240 and if I'm wrong about the recomendation, I should be promptly slapped. :D
 
I don't think you'll break anything, but you will probably waste a bit of electricity. If you already have the pump, you could try it and throttle it back with a gate (or even a ball) valve. If you don't have a pump yet, I think I would try something a bit less powerful.
 
Mag 12 is way too big. Mag 9 or equivalent is what you what to run the Aqua C 120. If you throttle back the mag 12 you will waste electriciy and make the pump more noisy than it already is. IMO
 
Yea, I already have the pump and I just don't think my rio 2500 is doing the job like it should be..

The old style doesn't have the way to adjust the air valve.. can I do anything about it?

Does the skimmer have air holes? Try to find something with a valve that will fit in one of the holes. If need be, drill the hole(s) out so they fit somthing with a valve.

Also, I think with a Mag12, you are going to have a really hard time keeping the water level low enough in the skimmer. And throttling back that pump that much just seems like a waste. Find a used Mag 7 online and fire it up with that.
 
I've used a mag 12 on my ev180 (same 1" exit plumbing as the ev120) and the others are correct, It is too much for the plumbing to handle. If you have the pump and want to try, I know a work around. If you remove the gate valve from the exit AND THE NIPPLE, the water line will drop below the top of the box. It is worth a try!


I would tap it to accept 5/8" threads (like the current models) and add a 3/8" JG to 5/8" Mnpt. Then add a 3/8" JG needle valve. :D

It does have air holes on the top of the black box. If I put an air valve myself, does it reduce the air volume?
 
The current models have a 3/8 inside diameter air valve. 3/8" JG tubing has a 1/4" inside diameter, but may be enough for the ev120 and 180.

A non-pressure pump will drop in electricity use equally with added head pressure. (like a gate valve on the output) :)
 
Ok, I do need to be slapped (I picture the scene from airplane, with everyone in line ;) )

run it on a 3/8" JG "T" in tandem with a 3/8" JG ball valve. One valve for ballpark, and one for fine tuning. Plug the skimmers air hole wih 3/8" JG and done.

I was re-reading some, and found in error in my post. For this "T" to work, the John Guest fitting in the box would need to be 5/8" male threads to accept 1/2" John Guest tubing. This keeps the ID at 3/8". It would then need a JG "T" with two 3/8" and one 1/2". The 1/2" for the box connection, and then the tandem valve thing.

I've been wondering if it's possible to get darker skimmate out of my Remora. Right now, I'm getting dark, tea-colored skimmate. I'm wondering if it's possible to get an even darker, almost coffee-colored, dryer skimmate. Anybody have pics of their skimmate? Please provide days worth of skimmate, fish bioload, and what you feed, and how often.

Does anyone happen to have an extra collection cup for the EV 240? Mine had an unfortunate accident and is in no less than 5 pieces. Can one be purchased from the manufacturer?
