AquaC CLUB!

Another couple days!? I should have thought about that and ran it for a couple days in a rubbermaid container before I hooked it up, I just never had any real bioload on it when I first hooked it up so it was like 2 weeks before it really produced any skimmate the first time. I guess I wasn't expecting it to take quite that long to break in the new pump.

Thanks for the info CaptainCoral.

Does anyone know why Aqua C products have fallen out of favor with this board? I was out of the hobby for a few years until recently and I can not understand the enormous change in opinion between now and 2005. It seemed like back then Aqua C was the preferred skimmers suggested to users. Now, I'm afraid to recommend Aqua C for fear of having everyone jump down my throat for even mentioning the name.
I have used Aqua C products for the last 5/6 years (EV 120 and a Remora pro) and couldn't be happier.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me ???

Thanks

I'd have to agree on this as well.

They've always had us on bubble size, but now they have comperable amounts of air as AquaC with the final blow as more energy efficient.
I've sort of been watching them and am personally waiting for them to finish. Once pumps with expanded volutes are more common, I think they'll have hit full stride.

That said, there will always be people wanting to process more water, so Beckets, etss, and AquaC will still be around.

I don't care much for popular opinions myself...never did. Its' a good way to do what others think you should do. Following my gut is job one for me. :D I'll end up trying one out to see what they do. With electricity like it is now, half the watts is starting to sound good.

it will handle it
and if you doubt it, add a small ball valve to it. like the one that usually comes with the two lil fishes phosban reactor

I need some help, I am using EV120 with Sicce Extrema pump (550gph), I have being using the skimmer for 7 months and I still cannot get it works properly.
Last week, I change the pump to Rio20HF with a T off to control the flow, it started with stable water level and suddenly will ovefoaming my collection cup is full of salt water, and it can fill up ~ 1 gallon in just few hours. So I change back to the Sicce extrema last Sunday, initially it was not producing any skimmate, the foam is not even goes up to the collection cup, but yesterday night, it goes crazy and start to overfoam, this time I direct the outlet of the collection cup back to my sump and didnt caused any flood in my cabinet.

Anyone can help me? I just want a skimmer that work properly.

Call them! They can walk you through it.

I just recently setup my EV-180. The documentation calls for a Mag 7 but I went with a Mag 9.5 and a valve to throttle-back the pump if necessary. As per the instructions, I set the water level to the inside top of the grey box with air wide open (make sure you do this carefully --- it's important). At first the Mag 9 was throttled back some but I ended up adding a 90deg elbow (with necessary anti-siphone hole) to the outflow (for noise issues) so then the Mag was opened all the way up. I let the skimmer run (at this point I had just mixed my SW --- there was nothing in the tank.

Almost as soon as I added my LR the skimmer came alive. Liek you, at first I started getting huge amounts of slightly colored SW in the collection cup and overflowing back into the sump. Without changing the water level (via the gate valve) I slowly dialed-back the air in small increments giving the skimmer an hour or so to settle. After a few steps I got it just where I want it. Patience seems to be the key.

I have run a EV 240 w/Mag 12 for 6 years and updated to the 1" injector a little over a year ago. The thing has been flawless. I recently purchased a MSX 200 (mesh wheel) just to see if I was missing something. The MSX has only been running for four days so I cant compare anything yet. What really made look for something new was the reaction tube stayed dirty. My 240 did a great job skimming, it just couldnt get it to the collection cup. I was always wiping it out. By the time the nog got high enough in the cup to start going to the collection container, my reaction tube needed cleaning.
I tried stepping up the pump to a Mag 18 and it did help some, but I still couldnt get it wet enough to make it to the top. One thing is for sure. The EV's are built like a tank and will last and last without any real maintenance. Its still up in the air as of now, but I will soon have a EV 240 or a MSX 200 for sale.

I used to have that same problem with the riser tube getting caked all the time. I've got it tweaked now so the riser tube doesn't really get dirty at all. Same setup; EV240, Mag18 and 1" injector.

I posted a pic a few pages back, and you can see that the riser tube is clean.

Too much gunk in riser tube...

How did you get it to stay clean? What is causing my riser tube to stay so dirty??
Should cut off more air and get the water level higher?

or3000 on a EV-180.

I've given up on trying to keep my riser clean. It gets really dirty after about 5 days (see picture below), but I don't really care. The way I see it, it's very easy to get to (for me) and all the crap I wipe off is crap removed from my system. It does, unfortunately, deminish skimmate production in my opinion.

Yes, there are 3 holes in the lid to let air out I presume. I'm not sure why they are there because there is also a drain line around the backside that I use. I bought the skimmer used, so I am guessing that maybe the drain line was an add-on and the holes were needed in the original design. Unfortunately, this means that unless I plug them, I cannot use a shutoff type of waste container.

This is how I have mine set up:

Mag 18 with a 12-13" length of 1" braided tubing, no ball valve or anything in between.

The gate valve is open all the way and then closed about a quarter or half turn.

The air valve is open around 2/3 of the way.

It works awesome this way. I hope this helps you out. Pm ME if you need me to take some pics or somthing.

Has this happened to anyone else? About 4 months ago I bought an EV-180, and shortly after I started using it, the collection cup developed a crack. The cracks have kept coming and although it doesn't leak, I am starting to get concerned.

Update...
Finally got around to sending them an email about this problem. Steve is sending a new cup to me! Another example of AquaC's superior customer service...

I am still trying to tune it. Yesterday I got the overfoaming again, and this time I didnt adjust the gate valve but only the air valve tuning. Now the skimmer back to "normal" again, no skimmate compare to overfoaming. Why I keep getting 2 extreme case?
