AquaC CLUB!

runningnreefing,
I think your pump or your injector might be clogged like others have stated earlier. If cleaning the two doesn't fix your problem, I recommend raising your water level by 1/2" to 1" above the recommended height inside your skimmer. Pay attention to it so it doesn't flood your house. I would direct your collection cup drain line back to your sump just in case.

I ran my EV-180 with mediocre skimmate for a whole year before I found out the cause of my problem (Mag7 on an EV-180) too.

How many fish do you have in your tank?

ScottL4619,

You are a genius. I thoroughly cleaned the air valve last night, and now there are bubbles in the riser chamber for the first time since I started running the skimmer. I think you solved the skimmer problem. I will check it after work to see if the skimmer is skimming. Thank you very much for your help.

I certainly wouldn't say genius...more like I've been around the block with this skimmer and I think I am starting to understand it more than my own dog.

I'm glad you got it going again. Keep in mind that the air valve will need to be cleaned once a week or every two. Salt creep tends to get in there and really shut down the air flow. You don't always have to clean it in vinegar though, a good rinsing in hot water should usually do the trick. Keep us posted.

ok, I have a new 240 EV with 1" injector and a mag 18. The tank is just being setup and the skimmer has been running for 4 days. I can make the skimmer have bubbles with no problem but its not skimming anything but water. I have 180 lbs live sand in tank and approx. 150 lbs live rock in there now.

So, my tank may not have anything to skim being that all the rock is cured from old tank which still has the remaining rock to be put in the 180 gallon.

How should I have the skimmer setup as far as the reaction tube. Should the bubbles be 1/2, 3/4, at the top. The jg fitting is also closed. Gate valve about halfway open and air about 3/4 open or more.

Thanks
Alex

well now it is skimming like a beast! never really changed anything. just kept the foam tower a little over 75% full now it is pulling very stinky nasty stuff out with the quickness!

Hey guys,

I've only used AquaC's on my tanks (I've only had 20g tanks)

I am using an AquaC Nano on my 20g right now, and I upgrade the MJ900 to an MJ1200 instead. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this, with any success? It seems like it might be too much, and not giving me as much microbubbles, but more watery bubbles.. if that makes any sense.

However, I was using Garlic Xtreme and Selcon before I switched pumps over.. so this is probably why I wasn't seeing much microbubble production..

Anyone using an MJ1200 on a AquaC Nano??

Hey guys
I've had an EV-240 with a mag18 for about 4-5 years. About a year ago I switched to a large dual beckett so the EV-240 was out of action. 2 weeks ago I set up a new 70 gal with a 55 gal sump. I'm running my 240 off my main pump which is a Reeflo Marlin, pressure rated 2190 gph. About 700 gal to my return and 1500gal to the skimmer. With that the water level is still high and I cut it back so its up to the baffle. Air and gate valve wide open. So for 2 weeks I just get turbulent water at the base but no foam. I'm thinking this is from about 50% new water added when I started it up. All the rock and 1/2 the water were from my old tank. I know the skimmer works good and didn't need to be broken in again. Am I missing something with the pump or is 2 weeks not enough time for that much of a water change to accumulate organic matter?

oooo wow it sounds like when you cut back the flow from your main pump it also killed your head pressure. you still have a ton of flow but with no head pressure.

Do all the ev-240's come with the 1" injector?

Have had my 240 w/ mag18 for about a year and a half now with mix results, recently moved it out of the sump and the thing is a beast. Also had a 120 for a while on a smaller tank and used it when I was cycling my 180g for the first few months wasn't too bad considering the size rating for it.

Few questions for yall:

Those that have tried, is there any worth in moving to a 1" injector on a ev180? (running mag9.)

Has anyone tried with any air valve type mod/changes? Beside trying to stick on a valve that is easier to fine tune, my valve gets salt buildup pretty frequently.

Thanks!

I replaced my 3/4" injector with the 1" one for my EV-180, and it seemed to help a little. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it helped.

I think the quickest way to prevent salt spray from getting into your air valve is to put a hose over it and have the other end of the hose far away from the water. I attached mine to a PVC pipe and shoved charcoal in it. The air valve is only thing that I never have to clean.

Does anyone know off hand whether their are threads like this for other skimmers or for any good skimmers. I can't believe that the better skimmers perform any worse than this one does. I will never recommend or purchase/use this model skimmer again on my tanks. Maybe my bio-load isn't high enough. If it isn't then this shouldn't be rated for my size tank (120 gallon). I have 8 fish in my tank and the bio-load is what should be expected in this size tank. I'm tired of this skimmer and if I didn't pay soooo much money for it then I would just ditch it and start over. They say you get what you pay for in this hobby. Not with this skimmer. It's so bad that I don't take any recommendations from the person who recommended it to me when I started in the hobby. I've heard others say it works well for them. Those people are running 180 gallon tanks or larger. Mine isn't that large though it fits in the recommended tank size for this skimmer.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the air injector though. I'll try that. Hopefully it'll help and relieve me of the chore of cleaning it weekly.

chase33, I know exactly what you're going through. I ran my EV-180 with a Mag7 for a year with mediocre result. I HATED my EV-180. I wanted throw it out until I replaced my Mag7 with an Eheim 1262. It worked so well that I had to dose amino acid to keep my corals from fading.

I don't know if you're using a Mag7 to drive your skimmer, but if you are, you'll NEVER get it to work. Maybe others have better luck than I did. The only thing I don't like about my EV-180 is that I have to clean my injector constantly otherwise it wont skim.

Hope you get yours running.

exactly what i did on my ev 120..with a mag 5..it skims a minimal cup then it just wont not put out any more..so i went with a eheim 1262 and whoa..
things i had to do after the upgrade..remove the gate valve completly and raise the skimmer with some egg crate until the water level was about neck level or just a bit higher..adjust this level with the air valve closed to see where the water level is the just open the air valve a bit..no too tiny but no too much..you want a good bubbling action but not a misty tiny bubble action..and you will to sit on it for about 10 minutes because if you have too much bubbles..it will all of a sudden start to flood the cup so you want to close just a tad less..you should get some bubbles into the cup in a few minutes then it should calm down and you probably wont see result for about half hour or so..just let it be..you should be able to dump a cup of skimmate in a day but i would just turn the pump off, remove and clean the cup, put back on and turn on pump. dont adjust anything..then you should get about twice as much but it will take a few more days..its just how mine works and it does skim alot if you stop messing with it

I upgraded to the mag 9 and refuse to change to the eheim. I'm not spending any more money towards this skimmer.

I don't understand the negative comments on the AquaC EV series. I've been using a 180 powered by a Mag 9.5 and it just couldn't work any better. This sucker rocks and I've never had any problems with it --- ever. My injector stay clear and it pulls out some nasty crud. A couple of small pieces of eggcrate broke off and got sucked-up by the Mag 9.5 and ended up in the injector of the skimmer. The damn thing STILL worked!
