thats a great idea. i had an idea like that in mind but instead i was thinking of removing the air valve, then screw in a threaded pvc coupler and then a 12 inch piece of pvc to a female threaded coupler then put the air valve there. basically moving the the air valve from down there of the skimmer body to up higher and away from being clogged by salty water.

btw the way, for those who still have no luck in this skimmer, i forgot to clean my skimmer cup after 4 days of skimming and it was nasty. some skimmate was oozing out and hanging off the cup

pel.........just tagging along on this great thread and I am also running a EV120, a butt kicking unit for sure.:eek1: :eek1:. Just a quicky... on the skimmate cup, maybe you moved the overflow hose for the pic ??? if not is there a reason it's pointing straight up and not into a collection cup ??
 
it should be into another collection cup but i need to buy one or make one. the skimmer is inside the sump so even if it over flows, it just overflows into the sump.

i check the cup every other day and i NEED to clean it. It fill ups pretty quick. i havent been running the skimmer much this week because of our power outage due to Hurrican Ike but after 3 days of non-skimming i need to clean the cup today

I use a small poland spring bottle that simply rests on the side skimmer.

However, this creates a 'spray of gook' all over the sump/cab area if the skim is too wet and it isnt adjusted right and overflows...those are bad mornings :lol:
 
I'm starting to get irritated with my Urchin.

Hasn't been making much foam lately. So I take it apart, clean it, & run water & vinegar through it. Running the water/vinegar it makes foam that goes up to the collection cup. Clean it out with freshwater & put it back in the tank.

Still not making much foam & not creating any skimate. Just pulled off the MJ-1200 & I'm running a Penguin 1140 (300gph) now.
 
I was brainstorming and was wondering if anyone has ever tried to mod their EV Series with an extra pump to recirculate the air-water mix and break the bubbles up since that seems to be the biggest downside to AquaC's design is the large bubble size.
 
I too have an aqua C remora with MJ1200 for over a year and for the past few months it has skimmed very little even with the cup all the way down. I tried cleaning the pump and the skimmer with no change in skimate production. It used to run great. I don't know what else to do except to call remora.

Making it a recirc skimmer might make it more stable/consistent......someone certainly had to have tried it.

Yeah, I'm at a loss.

It just doesn't produce the foam it was just a couple of weeks ago. I know the water flow is good through it, it just isn't producing any bubbles. I'm going to try it in the sink again & see what happens with the water/vinegar.

I'd like to be able to sell it when I upgrade, but I can't sell it if it doesn't work.

I wanted to take off the white screw that goes over the input but it just started to strip.
 
I have an EV 180 and ideally would hook it up to an external pump. Is there a consensus best external pump? I saw on the website they recommend an Iwaki 30.., but no mention on what to use if you want to overdrive it.

I have a Poseidon PS2, which would probably be the best option that I currently own, but haven't wanted to deal with the extra heat. I also own a PanWorld 40px, which worked well on the EV 120, but probably under powered for the 180, although its not far off from the iwaki 30. I'm currently using a mag 7, to get a starting perspective and will then experiment.

I'd try to find a pump with the flow rate of a mag9 and the same or better pressure rating. :) Keep in mind the length of pump feed line as well, as the flow and pressure that works well with the mag9 internally installed is usually very short.
 
Anyone have any ideas? I'm seriously confused.

Running it with water/vinegar it creates foam & will fill the collection cup in a matter of minutes. I haven't had a skimmer for maybe 2 weeks. I pulled out some old water & put the skimmer in a bucket. Nada. It's making bubbles & seems to flow fine, it just isn't creating bubbles that will create the foam necessary to pull out the organics.

Mostly EV users around here, but it's the same formula with the remora and urchin. Not all pumps with the proper flow (for a particular model skimmer) is sufficient to produce foam. A pump in the proper flow range with a higher head shut off than the others (in that range), is the top dog pump. :)

More pressure = better air/water mix =better spray = better foam
 
I ran it w/ a Penguin 1140 & MJ-1200 in series. Still didn't produce anything.

At first I thought it was just the water being too clean. But I haven't run a skimmer for 2 weeks now.

I'm just perplexed as to why it will foam up so quickly with vinegar & water but no produce anything with dirty saltwater.
 
Vinegar is a good natural cleanser for general household use (and for our reef tank equipment) Great for removing calcium build up, bad for judging a skimmers performance on our tanks. Go to a few sponsors sites and check the max head pressure ratings on pumps in your flow range. Look into the mag3 see if you can find one with more head ability than that one.

An impressive shut off at 11 feet. Not likely a better pump for that skimmer and the one I would use.

The penguin and the maxi are poor pumps for pressure applications. :)

With the two pumps run in series there was a ton of water going through it. I also connected my Mag 7 to it. I didn't go full force with the Mag 7, but it was close. Still nothing.

I wasn't trying to judge it's performance by using the vinegar. I'm just perplexed as to why it creates foam with the vinegar/fresh water & not the salt water.

I've got a new skimmer on the way but I might try messing around with the Mag 7 to see if I can get it to work again. Can't sell it if it doesn't work.

Ozonizer on my EV180=no more foam

Hey guys,

I just hooked up my redsea aquaplus ozonizer to my EV180, at the john guest fitting. Its been almost 3 days and my Foam production is gone. I was wondering if useing an air pump which is to strong, to run the ozonizer may cause the foaming to stop in the skimmer? The john guest fitting was installed by the water intake and the grey air intake on the skimmer.

Any tips to get my foam back.
I also have an EV150 in the same sump...and it is working fine.

I have found that the more ozone I inject into my skimmer the wetter I have to run my skimmate to get something into the collection cup. I run my ozone relatively low 10-15mg and the dryer foam comes back.
