The ratings are not right. I can tell you in a return pump application, the 1260 absolutely smokes the Mag7 in flow (and noise). The Mag dies under headloss, the Eheim doesn't. I think that is why it would be a much better pump for an injection skimmer.

I think there may be some Voodoo going on with regards to pump manufacturers gph claims. I havn't looked but I bet the Eheim pumps a greater percentage difference at five or six feet of head.

sjm817, doh, you beat me by two minutes. :)

Captain,
Indeed my skimmer is raised about 4".
So IÃ"šÃ‚´ll wait for the panworld and see what happens.
THanks!
Marco

Ok the Eheim 1260 pumps 575 gallons per hr @2 feet the mag 7 pumps 550 @ 2feet can I assume the Eheim has more pressure because the folume is about the same. It dosen't seem like 25 gallons less per hr would make much differance.

yeah, but you need to add the ~6ft of head that the injector adds,

fwiw, that yeilds the mag 7 a hair under 400gallons and a eheim 1260 a hair over 400gph per flow chart at drsfosterandsmith.
I'm thinking pump variance in pressure might effect things as well. meaning the pump flowing a steady amount instead of varying amounts.

All I can say that in a return pump application, there is no comparison. The 1260 blows away the Mag7. I looked at the charts before I bought it and expected equivalent flow. Not even close.

Well I guess that will be my next investment an Ehein 1260 and a gete valve. The skimmer is looking good right now. It's been running about 24 hrs with out me changing anything. I have the ball valve from the pump closed about 1/4, the air valve about 1/3 closed and the gate valve is closed about 2 full turns the water in the skimmer is even with the top of the black box. It's making some good foam I guess I will wait an see if that foam will get pushed down into the bottom of the collection cup. Thanks to all who have offered help on this skimmer/pump problem.

FWIW I'm running an EV 180 with a Mag 9.5 and it is working well. The pump is close to the skimmer with one elbow, plumbed with 1" pipe right up to the stock injector where it steps down. The pump has no valve on it, runs wide open. I use the skimmer gate valve to roughly adjust the bubble height in the tower, cut the air back to get good bubble size, then tweak the skimmer gate valve to get the wet/dry where I want it.

Printedpaper, I believe the gatevalve on your mag7 will help dial in "exactly" how much pressure you want on the injector quickly and on demand. You can still find the desired pressure with a ball valve (albeit with slightly more playing around), and once you do find it, you shouldn't need to play with that adjustment anymore. I mean, it isn't as crucial as the gate on the skimmers output is. (having a ballvalve there would suck indeed).
I don't believe that an ev120 w/mag7 needs an Eheim pump. An ev120 with a mag5 is another story. :) An ev120 with a mag 7 is a good combo and you should hang in there with it.
Also, I wanted to ask you for updates on your latest adjustments. How is that working out?

I would pick the Eheim

Yes!, this is good advise to anyone without a pump, however, printedpaper already is overdriving the ev120, and he shouldn't be pressured into a better pump (even if it is a better pump) when the one he has, can jam like U2 (or insert any great band here) with that model!

Captain the skimmer has quit building up foam at the top of the colection cup. I cleaned the cup and emptied it on Sunday as of Wednesday night the skimmate is 1/2 way up to the hose that drains to a gallon jug (about 1/2 inch of liquid skimmate). I opened the valve feeding the skimmer a bit but that is all I've done. Should I do something else? Mark

One cup in three days isnt much, I would try the pump without any restriction and leave the skimmer's gate valve wide open or take it off completely. The air will need to be cut back a fair bit or it will probably flood. Should be getting at least a cup of dark stuff a day. I dont see the point of a valve on the pump and having the skimmer gate valve closed a bit?

If mine dosn't perform like this each day, it needs a clean.

Won't wait for me to wash the cup!

Currently the 180 is extracting around a gal per week, note air is cut back about halfway, pump is a 1262 -not choked.

Wow Bootang that is some nasty looking skimmate. I hope I can get mine to that point someday. Mark

Blootang, you are getting fabulous results!

Here is the reason that I gate my skimmers output regardless of pump pressure.

In this pic, the water height is gated to near the top of the box.

In this pic the skimmer's gate has been opened full.

I left my air open full to show how small and consistant the bubbles can get from just raising the water height.

This is 10 minutes after a cleaning.

This was taken 5 minutes after the above shot.

edit...one more just taken to show small bubbles made it all the way to the top.

carefull blootang, capt, you 2 will cause people with other skimmers to have skimmer envy...

Although, i've witnessed an MR2 that pulled about a gallon per day...
serious bioload though.
Curious blootang what kind of bioload and feeding?

Likewise Captain, those fine bubbles are awesome. I can see why you put some gate on but If I try, I get turbulence. My level also sits at the top of the box with the gate fully open. Could this be because it's a smaller skimmer? There is no way I can run it with the air wide open either.

Rob, skimmer envy, hehehe! 5 fish from approx 2.5-4" and one at 7", soft corals, couple of blood shrimp. Feed once a day, Tetrabits, brineshrimp, fresh fish, nori, celery leaves. Not all at once though. I find frozen and fresh seafood makes my skimmer go crazy, whilst Tetrabits will kill it for an hour.
