Hi, I have a question about my EV240 and this seems like the place to ask!

I have an EV240 on a mag 18 (with ball valve). The tank is a 90 gallon that I just got set up. All it has is water, sand and some 16 pounds of live rock that I just added.

My sump is 60 gallons and the skimmer is sitting in a section where the water level is constant and it is being fed raw overflow water.

WHen I added the rock it started foaming up pretty good but the thing is, I can't get it set to the right place. Yesterday, I added a PVC elbow to mr refugium and the skimmer basically stopped skimming.

The thing is; when it was foaming pretty good, it would either be overflowing way to quickly or barely making it into the cup. Never a happy medium. When I do get it into the cup, do I want the bubbles overflowing INTO the cup, or kinda sitting at the top of the cup popping and stuff.

I had added a bunch of sand about 1 week ago and my tank was really cloudy and the skimmer was pulling out all the dust and stuff. I think this may have an effect on the skimming. Maybe I just don't have enough bio load. The rock I got was uncured, off the plane, out of the box, and into my tank. I dunno, I'm lost.

I have the Remora w/ Maxi 1200, after only two days it's producing stinky light brown water. Still quite a bit of bubbling though flowing back into the tank, will these bubbles stop soon?

Are you asking is this normal, how to dial it in or what to do next?

I would double check the pump/skimmer for any sand. It DOES take sometime to dial in the skimmer.
 
waxxieman, foam is what you want to the cup, not the bubbling water.. you want those in between the box and the sticker.

btw, any new plumbing will kill a skimmer untill it is able to get a coating on it from being in the water.
you putting your hands in there to put the pvc on itself will cause it to die out for one to several hours depending on your pump.
gcarroll probably better to help you with the mag than I.

Craig, with the remora, i do use the preskimmer box to get rid of the microbubbles, and it does seem to help it skim better. Plus i can toss carbon or polyfilter as needed into the outflow box, its on a qt tank so i need to remove med's from time to time..

I will say this. With the 1260 pump, the time after putting your hands in tank to "back to normal" is about 10X faster then my old Mag 5!

You were 100% right on this pump...unreal

Ah, thanks so much. I didn't get the filter box as it was quite big given my tank size. I think it was ~7 inches, which is a LOT considering my 29g! Would putting a small foam filter on the pump help reduce microbubbles?

Okay, you guys sold me on the Eheim pumps. I've got an EV-180 and I've read this thread a couple times and I still haven't figured out if I need the 1260 or the 1262.

Which should it be?:confused: :twitch:

I just recently put my Mag 9.5 on it. I've got a ball valve to knock it down a little but there's still a lot of turbulence.
 
I know rob likes the 1262 for the 180. Same with AquaC.

It was HARD to spend 35% of the skimmers valve on a pump but wow, does it work!...Trust me, it was hard to spend the $$$$; since the wife thinks I am nuts on this thing...LOL

But you have a MAG 9.5 would should work...

Another ODD ball thing is the ORP on the tank now is VERY high without ozone...
 
here is a pic of my current bio load and my skimmer. Is this about where I want to be in terms of level and bubble density? I just added the rock about 3 days ago.

I would say close the water level OR open the water valve.

It is a pain. I have to remove my output gate valve and see what happens. Have to play around and see what works best.

I was reading your post, and I believe you've thought through this pretty well, and I think you've hit the nail on the head.
AquaC's will pull out (disregarding poor husbandry skills) the "nasty" from the water column very fast. In your case, so fast that you didn't even have a chance to decide if you like skimming wet with this skimmer, or dry. AquaC's do both very well!

Also, your pic looks great, you have plenty of small bubbles going on, and whether you skim wet or dry, you'll be fine. (it's running quite wet in the pic) When running wet there will be very little or no scum build up on the riser, when set dry, over time there will accumulate needle wheel/airskimmer style scum on the walls of the riser.

I wouldn't worry about trying to get any more skimmate right now, and deciding how to set it can wait. :) BTW, I wouldnt lower the water, I'd lower the air intake "slightly" because your bubbles are nice and small, and lowering the water will enlarge them. :)

You'll be fine, and there's no reason to buy a new pump for your 180. (unless your system is small enough to have heat issues) If you don't see turbulence, you'll likely never see any foam reach the cup. Hang in there and wait for it to adjust to new settings and plastics.

Also, I'll soon have my ev180/w Eheim 1260 running on my softie tank and have full pics, updates, and results. My initial feeling is that this pump drives it just fine with short tubing, but I'm hesitant to give any advise on that matter for about a week. (I finally have two days off in a row to do the old "swap-a-roo" of the equipment).

Waxxiemann.....I believe that the water line in your pics is fantastic, you have only slightly more air than needed. Lower the water line now only at cost to dwell time of your bubbles. (because lowering it will enlarge the bubbles making them rise faster and collect less scum) I'd choke the air only slightly if this is what I was looking at in my cabinet. There is more than enough air to afford this, and your pics prove it. :)

Waxximan, That's kind of what i had to work with, when my sen 900 was on the skimmer except i could see a change in water level above the box, you have solid bubbles to the box, therefore
if was me, i'd do the same as capt suggest, just close down the air a bit,
 
I had my advice reversed. And the other posters correct me. Thanks, I had them 180% off....I had a late night messing with my T5 bulb issue (that was normal I guess; still need to check ohms still ).

But I took of my skimmers output gate valve of my skimmer. I did that so I did not have to restrict my 1260 pump to much. So now no gate valve on skimmer and I have the pump running 100% open! Air is closed about half way and the bubbles are right at the bottom of the cup.!!!!!!!! THANK GOD!

I now have my ozone runing to clean up the 3 weeks of downtime with the mag5 running.

Will take pix later.
 
My Remora is bubbling over into the collection cup like crazy! If I empty the cup, as soon as I turn it back on it's bubbling a steady stream of bubbles into the collection cup. So much so that it is full of water in a matter of hours, I know you are suppose to drain it every couple days, am I supposed to leave it full or drain it?
