PS By the way, if you have never used a SEN pump, then you don't know what you are missing! :) These pumps are VERY powerful and HIGH PRESSURE rated so they are perfect for driving a skimmer. I would imagine they are equivalent of a 1262 Eheim.

But how noisy is it?

based on the directions it should be in-line with the top of the box (dark plastic). I think from there you need to find the correct location for yours.

But if you are having a hard time with the water level(and outlet is open 100%, air is turned down, you need to gate the pump down.

robsmith32 posted on the SEN 900 I think and he disliked it; likes his 1260 the best I think. I think the Sen's do use more watts = $$$

I know my 1260 is as quiet as my Quiet One 3000 and works great on my EV-120...so far.

It's not very loud, but I don't have other pumps to compare it to. I have it sitting on a rubber mat to make it even quieter.

mburnickas,

I may need to throttle the pump back a bit since it does seem just a little too powerful. I have removed the gate valve and it still is about one inch above where it should be.

CaptianCoral & robsmith32 & mburnickas,

I use a SEN 700 and it is so powerful that with the air valve closed the water rises about one inch into the riser tube. I am having a hard time getting my skimmer adjusted. Would you recommend that the water level should be exactly even with the top of the platform (ie, where the dark plastic meets the clear riser tube) in order to get the most out of this skimmer?

UM< do yourself a favor, take the sen off, set to the side, and put an eheim on.. you'll thank me.

I had a sen 900 on my 180 for 3 weeks, yes it is more powerful than the eheim, but it doesn't FOAM like the Eheim.. Foam is what you're after for a skimmer.
THe sen will overflow the skimmer for sure, first night i hooked it up, i woke up middle of the night cause i heard the dreadful pump sucking air noise. Went downstairs to a flooded floor. Luckily i had 20gallons of saltwater mixed up to do a water change.
TO get it to dry out on the sen though, just close the airvalve down a bit, you have to play with it a while though. as in, get it foaming wet, and close it a little, then its going over the top again, close a little more, keep doing till where you like..
but process has to repeat whenever you put hand in tank, or feed, cause it doesn't recover.
The eheim, plug it in, and watch it foam away, yes i have to cut air back with the eheim but it recovers without me jacking with it.

I know I need a gate for my 1260..be here tomorrow. So far in less then 24 hours, I have gotten more stuff out then 1 week on my mag5.

I know the water level is too high......LOL

oh, btw, if you look at the ratings for the sen900, it says 80 watts,
it also has 1.3 amps. um, isn't that in the neighborhood of 150 -160 watts.
That reminds me, i'm gonna plug it in my killawatt when i get home to see what it says its using.

Regarding all your comments, I wonder why AquaC recommends smalleer pumps for their skimmers, for example they recommend mag18 for the EV400, but that pump simply is not powerful enough for this model.
I think the overall comments would improve if they recommended the appropriate pump for each skimmer.
BTW, Guys I donÃ"šÃ‚´t know how do you know when the water level inside the skimmer is at or below or above the black box, I simply cannot see it because there are so many bubbles that it makes it impossible for me to see. I can only see it if I turn off the air valve but I donÃ"šÃ‚´t know how accurate it would be as for leveling the water this way.

Hey Marco.

In regards to the water height thing, what I do is raise it until the wave crests appear in the riser. I then back it off slowly until I can no- longer see it. That puts it generally near 1/4 inch from the top. You're right, it is very difficult to see between there and the bottom plate, without a spotlight. :)

Hi Mark,
The problem is I canÃ"šÃ‚´t see it because of the bubbles and there is so much turbulence that it makes it impossible to see where is the water level.

Let's not forget that the Mag 18 will work for skimming on an EV400. It is not the best choice but it will work. Just like my mag 24 will work on my EV1000. bottom line is that no one who chooses the appropriate pressure pump has the problems that we have with the submersible non pressure pumps. Let's also not forget that we used to be happy with thick black skimmate now many of us want wet skimmate. So our only choice is to overdrive the skimmer with a larger than recommended pump.

Greg,
The problem i was experiencing with the mag 18 is that itÃ"šÃ‚´s lack of pressure was making that the bubbles didnÃ"šÃ‚´t reach the collection cup.
IÃ"šÃ‚´m not talking about wet or dry skimmate, IÃ"šÃ‚´m talking of no skimmate at all in the collection cup.
Indeed the 1" would have been very helpful I think, but I received it after I installed my panworld.
Thanks!

Turn the air off and wait for it to calm down, then you should be able to see the water level.

Thanks!

sen 900 in kill a watt, shows varying between 127 and 129 watts. Mostly reading 128 watts. When stamp on it says 90 watts.

Granted that was running full bore in a tub, my eheim on the skimmer only used 51 watts.

wow, that is a lot! Is there anyway to tell other then a Kill-a-watt meter?

So far my 1260 is going very well. Trying to dial it in now.

robsmith32, can you run it through the skimmer and check again? It'll probably be 90 watts then. hehe

What a great tool, I'd like to see what happens to other pumps with that thing. :)

um, i'd have to have my skimmer useless for a couple hours if i did that. capt.

mike there are other ways, such as getting a clamp on amp meter from hd, lowes. sears, radio shack. THen you have to figure the wattage by figuring power factor, and multiplying volts times amps. plus the meters are over $100, and the killawatt was around 35 from drfostersandsmith.
