AquaC Remora Skimmer Question

Hi .. I have this skimmer, and it has never really produced very much skimmate. One thing I noticed, is after the intake tube enters the skimmer and meets the plastic piece inside .. some water bubbles imerg around the tube. Was wondering if it should do this, or if it should be dry in that chamber. Maybe you guys that have this skimmer (and is working well for you) could take a look inside and see if yours is the same? Have also read that some people upgrade to a stronger pump, I am using the MJ1200 now, do you think moveing to a stonger pump would help?
Any other sujestions would be appreciated.
Thank You,
Dave

Mj 1200 is probably a good bit weak for that skimmer. I'd say mag 3 or similar pump. Also, you probably need to clean the injector, this is done by removing the white plastic screw.

Hi Rusty .. I have cleaned the injector, no change. Also this is the regular AquaC, not the Pro .. Do you still think it needs the Mag3 pump? Thanks

Its been running about 6 to 8 months. Lower the cup as low as I can .. and will pick up about 1/4 inch of skimmate in a day. I knmow my tank is not that clean!!

the white screw on the injector hose.

have you been fiddling with that?

try unscrewing it as much as you can without water leaking.

I remember one time I cleaned the skimmer and screwed that white screw in a little too much, and I had the skimmer up for about 2 weeks before I noticed the real problem.

I run a remora pro with mag 3 and the performance isn't the best, but I am happy with what I got since I got the body here off the forums for $50 and a mag 3 for $35. This will out skim any $85 skimmer with no modifications easily.

If I set the cup all the way down, the cup will fill up in a day, but I run mine drier and get about 1/2 the cup of skimmate in 4 days.

I don't really know what this means. Pic maybe? Definitely sounds like it's underproducing. Maybe you should call a service tech or something?

what I mean on the intake tube .. if you remove the collection cup and look inside .. you will see where the intake tube does a 45 deg bend and comes to a plastic plate with a hole, the water shoots through that into the skimmer. I get some water and bubbles in that chamber .. was just wondering if that should be sealed tight there .. or if everyone gets some water up there?

mine runs with the Mj, and the cup is raised as high as possible. Collects dark tea like skimmate. sounds like somethings up, call Aqua C, there service is excellent.

They have never asked me where or when I got mine. They just help. Customer service is what can make you an Aqua C customer for life. They know this. Try it. Also there are no serial numbers or anything like that, so they really can't pinpoint where or when you got it anyway.

Thanks .. will give the customer service a try, That is if you guys know the telephone number?? Looked on the computer but couldn't find anything??

Thanks Again,
I do hope someone will take a look in the skimmer and see if they also get water in the top chamber.

ditto

Thank You Kstallbe!! Don't know why that didn't come up when I was doing my search on the computer?? But do appreciate your taking the time to help me out. I sent them an email, will see what they have to say.
Still hopeing someone that has the regular Remora will take a look inside and see if they are getting water in the first chamber where the intake tube enters the skimmer. I just have a feeling that the tube should be sealed when it goes through the plastic after the bend. I get about an inch of water in there, so am just thinking maybe I am losing just enough presure there to make it function poorly.
Thanks Again Kstallbe

Ah, ya know... now that you re-describe where your problem, I think I know what you mean. Im pretty sure the two skimmers are almost identical (pro and regular), except the size. I have the Pro (I think), and water is definitely not supposed to be coming out there.

The water should come from the powerhead, through the grey tube, and only exit into the lower chamber. No water should be in that little area where the white screw is in the bend of the grey tube. Which is where I think you have water.

First, I would check to see if that little screw is leaking. Turn off the PH, screw it gently all the way out and then replace. Power on to see if water still accumulates. If so, I'd try using some teflon tape on the threads of the screw to see if that solves it. see: http://tinyurl.com/933dp

If that doesn't work then I'm guessing the screw is not the leaky area. So, here is what I would do. Take it off the tank. Run it in a bucket in the tub with plenty of good lighting. Put a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle with some water and stir gently (so as not to make it all turn into foam). Turn on the powerhead. Spray the area you suspect is leaking and look for bubbles (look hard, long and carefully and you should find them). There's your leak.

Take some non-mold-resistant silicone, apply, and viola! :)

Yep .. you got it now. That is where the water is. it isn't leaking from the screw. It comes through where the intake tub goes through that plastic piece to enter the next chamber. Isn't much room, but when I stick my finger down there, I can feel that it is not a tight fit going through the plastic. Am wondering if there should be some kind of seal or o-ring at the entrance??

I took a look at my Remora its the same as yours the first chamber on the left where water enters does not have any standing water in it, just a few bubbles. I put a Rio 1700 on mine recently if the cup is all the way down it will fill up in about 8hrs. but the skimmate is very light green. When I raise the collection cup a little over half way the skimmate is much darker but still green fills up in about 3 days.

I won't be back at my tank until Sunday. But, I think it is just glued there. No O-ring. Dab on some silicone. It's like duct tape for all things leaky!
