AquaClear 110 Refuge

Just wanted to get some info about turning my AquaClear 110 into a HOB fuge, I can't seem to find any info for some reason...

All I need to do is take out the "media basket" and put sand, live rock rubble, and cheato in it?

That's the understanding I get from what I have been able to find, does anyone else have any input on this matter?

Also, does anyone have any cheato I could purchase/have? I am also going to need to get some copepods, would it be better off to go buy one of those bottles that has 5000 in it?

IMO, skip the sand and the live rock rubble. The sand will get into the impeller and it's too small of an area to make any impact, anyway. Larger pieces of live rock will be ok, but the rubble will just hold debris. I also used part of the media basket to make a "fish guard". Here's a pic of mine from my old 16bowfront.

I can supply the startup cheato, but markviiisvt4 did that conversion a while back. He might be able to give you some pointers on what to do and what not.

I did this with a 110 and did not cut the impeller. Move the intake to the slowest position then lift it out of the slot and move it a little more. This will restrict the flow without cutting the impeller. If you need to reprime the filter just put the intake tube back in place. Then move the tube back to a location that gives desired flow. If you cut the impeller and remove too much you will not be able to prime the filter.

I left the basket in the filter and cut a piece of plexi glass to fit across the overflow. Then I drilled several holes making a screen to block anything from leaving the filter.

Glad to be of service!! I'm working on training my peppermint shrimp to do tricks for prawn eggs! I just found a bunch of feather dusters in there today!
