Aqualifter

After running my 75 gal mixed reef for a year I have decided to add a sump. I've purchased a cpr cs90 overflow with the Tom's aqualifter. My question is does the aqualifter need to run all the time or can it be plugged into an apc unit for when the power goes out?

Needs to run all the time to pull out the air in the overflow box.
Not the best design.
& keep a spare aqualifter
