Aquaph8's 225 Build

Aha, found your thread. I'll have to spend time tonight catching up on it.
Go figure, it's in the "œI'm jealous" forum (aka Large Reef Tanks)

Great thread... after seeing your plumbing makes me want to redo my mess....LOL
one thing i have for you is the wavey seas. do not surpass the GPH of flow or restrict the flow they are not sealed units and its just a spring inside holding the peices together to seal them.... I restricted the output to get a more direct flow and filled the inside of mine up with water and fried the motor. I loved it while it worked.

Hey Pete, its a pleasure to have you along, glad you found it. I call it the "Finally Naged My Wife Long Enough To Find A Weak Spot" forum. LOL

Hi Pallan, I did my plumbing three times before I got it where I wanted. Im loving the Wavy Sea's, its a shame they dont make em anymore. Hopefully they will last a long time before I gotta switch to sea swirls. Thanks for the tip and for stopping by, Welcome aboard.

hiya Brett...as for dosers Profilux is a very reliable one and so is Fauna Marin.
Automated dosing is much better than manual...mainly coz of the control on the dosing and adding small amounts over a period of time. This will not cause any instabilities.

Dont add Vodka if ur having cyano....it will fire it up further...
What yu think culd be reason for the cyano?

Great buy on the Kalk reactor. Are u running it full time on top off? Or just night (when lights off)?

I am manually dosing 2 part now...but as i start stocking more fishes and SPS im gonna switch to automated dosing and mayb add on a Kalk reactor too.
Let us know how ur parametrs holding up...Ca, Alk , PO4 since uv started dosing Kalk...

Happy Reefing :)

Hey Noob,:wavehand: the kalk reactor is doing awesome. Its running full time. I stopped dosing two part for now till I see what the tanks needs have changed to. So far I havent had to adjust anything. PH is stable at 8.2, alk is 7.8 and calcium is 400. So for now Im just gonna run kalk until the tank tells me otherwise. As the tanks needs go up Ill have to decide if I want to stay with two part or go calcium reactor. If I stay with two part, Im going doser for sure.

The cyano is just part of my punishment for a few things.:headwalls: I doubled the volume of my tank, I added a completely new sandbed with the change, and I feed a lot (this is due to the Queen Anthias).:spin2: All in all its not a huge deal, the biological filter is just trying to catch up. I'll win in the end. I've been through this many times before. Im not sure I will start Carbon dosing again but if I do it wont be until this is cleared up. I usually do bi-weekly water changes but Im gonna do weekly for a while and see if that helps. Whats funny is my SPS have never looked so good.

Alright I take it back, Im not sure this is cyano at all. Im starting to think its Dino's. You guys got any tips for me. I heard water changes make it worse, so maybe Ill hold off on that. Should I go lights out for a day and see if that helps?

if it's brown diatoms, it will eventually clear up on it's own.. just stick to you regular maintenance routine.. Your tank may be going through a mini cycle.

Bingo!!! I was just gonna tell ya that to hold off the biweekly water changes and go to the regular weekly schedule of 20%. As said ur tank is going thru a mini cycle. I feel it's coz of the sand bed :fun2: and feeding. Iv been adviced to rinse frozen food in RO prior to adding in DT.
IMHO please do hold back on adding any more fishes or live rocks till (read bioload) till the algae gets in control. Lights out for a day or two will be ok too.
I dunno why people call it micro algae when these algae are a macro pain in the rear :p
Do let us know wats going down
May the force be with you Brett. :lolspin:
Happy Reefing!!

Jon, it started off looking like diatoms and then cleared up really fast. A couple days later it came back and I thought it was cyano but after doing some research it looks like dinos. I sucked it all out with a water change last weekend and it was back the next day. Its really stringy and slimy looking. I'm not sure but Ill beat it. Just gonna have some ugly sand for a while.

Took a little action today:

Vacuumed the sandbed into a filter sock.

Filled reactor with GFO

Added new carbon to a filter sock. (usually run just carbon in the reactor, I dont use GFO all the time.)

Turkey basted all the rocks

I will continue my biweekly water change schedule like normal. See where this goes before I do anything else. If this doesn't show results Ill think about a day or two of lights out. Im pretty sure its Dinoflagellates as apposed to cyano or diatoms but who knows. Ill keep you guys posted on how it goes.

Good luck on fighting whatever it is...part of the journey I unfortunately. No doubt that you'll beat it.

Late comment on kalk use but I use a LMIII on my GEO continually dosed in small amounts 24/7 in the same sump section as my skimmer and drain. My thought is that the water is more turbulent there for mixing and the since the kalk precipitates phosphate, hopefully it gets skimmed out"¦donno if it's true or not but it sounds good. I do tweek the amounts from time to time in response to the test results.

 for the remedy measures...

:uzi: die micro algae DIEEEE :hammer:

Haha

That makes sense to me. So far my tank has been pretty stable with kalk alone. I havent dosed two part in a week. I guess Ill enjoy it while it lasts.

The algae or whatever it may be is annoying but Ive been through worse and like you said its part of the journey.

Very excited today. I found the number one fish on my list, Chelmon muelleri. Its been a long search but it should be in the states on Thursday. Ill share more details when I know if its coming to my house or not. I haven't been this happy about a fish in a long time.

No, NYaquatics was getting it but when he send me a pic yesterday it was a different butterfly. Pretty fish but not a muelleri.

My LFS store found me one but its not supposed to be here for 10-14 days so we'll see how it all pans out. Hopefully I can get these Dino's under control before then. I got my po4 checker the other day and my po4 is really low. My nitrates are low too. I think its just the new sand doing its thing. Whatever it is, my LPS/zoanthids arent responding to it very well at all. The SPS look great though. Here is a bad pic for fun. Ive gotta get a better camera and probably learn to use it too.haha
