Aquaph8's 225 Build

Brett, we completely understand you being nervous about the new babe. Not sure if it is feasible in your situation, but temporarily partitioning off a section of the tank can give the new fish a chance to get comfortable and establish it's territory while avoiding aggression issues. We have friends that have used this technique when adding Angels, especially conspecifics.

I have thought about this. Im not sure I will use it this time around but I would like to come up with a user friendly way to section off a part of the tank for new guys. Do you have any aggression issues with your Borbs?

That lamarks angel is stunning! Have been looking for one. Monday, if all works out, I am picking up a female watanabe angel, another one of my faves.

I love watanabe's too but Ive never come across one yet. Id like to run across one or two semifasciatus too. The lamarks is such a cool fish to watch. Goodluck with your watanabe.

Can relate to this jittery feeling when ya hav your fav fish about to get into the DT.
If ya very worried partition the tank with the bullies on one end and let the new guys get to feel at home.
I would like to be grumpy when my fish or corals die but only if my wife allows me to be grumpy lol :D
Most of the time the grumpiness has to buried inside me deep and camouflaged with a smiling face :D

Do post pics of them new guys in the tank :) with all the grumpy bullies on the other side of the partition :D

He's in man, hopefully it will all go OK when I let him out of the box.

Good luck Brett !

Thanks Jim,

Well, had a kinda sad day yesterday. I released the muelleri the night before and my yellow tang went nuts. I let it go for quite a while but it came down to having to make a choice between fish. So last night my yellow tang found a new home. On a postive note, the muelleri is now settling in nicely and everybody else is behaving really well. Hopefully the tang will be happy in his new home. Ive been kinda leaning twords going tangless for a while now. I still have the blue tang and I think thats enough for right now. The yellow guy will be missed but I think this is whats better for the direction the tank is going in. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, Im very thankful to have you all be a part of this thread, I always enjoy chatting with all of you.

Well bro nothing to worry about. Guess u can keep the yellow tang away for a while and reintroduce him after few months in detention.
He will behave once he is back I'm sure. But just to be on safer side let him be the last guy to go in the DT and after you have aquired all the docile fishes in your wish list :)
Good luck.
Happy Thanksgiving too you.
I personally am glad being a part of your build :)

Happy Reefing!!

+1 all the way on the tang re-intro or any other Tang for that matter.. Glad to hear the muelleri is doing well... I'd actually like to try another Copperband at some point if I can find a really healthy one. Even better if I find a muelleri, but I will run into the same problem with my yellow and PBT... Hoping that I can find a really small one..

Brett, we know that was a difficult decision for you as we get quite attached to our fish as well. Glad to hear the Muelleri is settling in and can't wait to see some pics!

Brett,

I take it I should keep my six yellow tangs in QT until I get all the other fish in the 450 huh ? :D

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours !

That would be a very wise idea gimmito. Though Tangs in a group tend to be less aggressive to new fishes when they are introduced, there is every chance there is one rogue tang in the group that may bully the newly added docile fish.
As far iv seen yellow tangs and the hippo tangs are the less aggressive towards when other new fishes of different species are added.
But fishes are like humans, to be specific like women....highly unpredictable.
:D

Tangs can be the most enjoyable and yet the most irritating fish imaginable. They can be so mellow and then they just decide they do not like a fish and that is it, that fish is going to pay or die.

Thanks Noob, reintroduction was my first thought too but I decided not to cause I dont want to go through the whole process again with more butterflies. Maybe someday down the road Ill buy a small one again or something but for now Im really liking the butterflies/angels and wrasses along with the occasional anthias or two. Ive had tangs for years and Im thinking its time to go another direction with this tank.

Jon, I highly recommend the muelleri. My opinions biased though cause its my favorite fish. NY aquatics had some not to long ago.

Thanks M&T. Its still weird not seeing him in there but atleast no fish was hurt to bad in the ordeal and peace has been reestablished. Ill try to get some pics soon. I keep taking them but Im never happy with the results, my camera skills need more practice than anything.:spin1:

Jim you'll be fine unless you add something with a really similar body shape. The muelleri was way too close in shape and he didnt like it. I have the same problem with my blue tang when it comes to angels but he just lets them know hes the boss and forgets about it the next day. The zebrasoma tangs dont seem to give up until the other fish is dead.

True dat.:lmao:

I definitely have a love/hate thing going on with tangs but they are an amazing fish for sure.

Brett....did I mention a friend is breaking down his tank ? He promised me his pair of Watanabe angels and black tang. The black tang is about 5" and the yellows are 2"-2 1/2". My plan is to move the yellow tangs into my 60 gal frag tank after QT. I'll keep them in there for awhile until I get all my other fish QT'd and in the main display. I think the black tang schooling with the yellow tangs would be a sight to see. :)

You lucky dog, those are some nice fish. Ive always wanted a pair of watanabe's but have never came across any. Really nice pickup, I wanna see some pics:spin2:

He won't be breaking the tank down for a few months, but promised them to me. I'll post pics when I get them though. :)

As promised.

Brett I just finished reading the complete thread and will definitely subscribe. Your setup is incredible! I also live in Tucson so it is nice to find another RC member that I can learn from. I do have one question I am fighting a mild outbreak of cyano and I was thinking about vodka dosing to help lower the nitrates and phosphates to hopefully kill it off, however I noticed that you wrote that the vodka becomes a food source for the bacteria? I sure will appreciate any help hopefully I am not hijacking your thread.

Thanks Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Welcome aboard man. Like I said in my first post there are no hijacks in this thread, please feel free to ask or comment on anything at all. Ive learned so much from the people who visit this thread, its always great to pass some of it on. Cyano is a pain but like almost everything in this hobby its a cycle.

Here's a few tips Ive learned about cyano.

* avoid any dead spots in your tank where uneaten foods and fish waste can collect and cause algae and cyano blooms.

* Manually remove any cyano as often as you can. The way I see it, the cyano has a food source and when you remove the cyano your also removing what it comsumed.

* I know a lot of people dont like it but over the years Ive had some pretty bad cyano and chemiclean did wonders helping get on top of the problem. With that said, its not a cure. Do one treatment (skimmer off and carbon removed) followed by a water change and then a follow up treatment 3 days later followed by another water change. If it still comes back you have other issues you need to take care of.

* Carbon dosing (vodka, vinegar) will make your problem worse initially. If carbon dosing is in your future, take care of the cyano first.

* Many have also reported postive effects from using baterial additives like Microbe lift's Special blend and KZ's coral snow. I have used special blend but not really for this reason so I can really comment.

Jbanks, I know you have some experience with this, please join in if you have anything to add. THX
