I'm going to do the same. Buy a pair of 60mm fans. Look at the db rating for each fan you are thinking of buying. Buy ones with bearings not bushings. You can control the fan speed by the voltage out-put.
I do the same on my 12 jbj now for almost 2 1/2 years. I just love my new 24 aquapod, will start on it in a few weeks need to finish my 40RR first.
Yes, whose are the right ones. I just bought two of them on-line. With shipping and taxs, $20.00. Plus the little tank is going to be in the family-room 20dbA will be NICE. Ho and 12 CFM even nicer.
Just do it.
I had a noisy fan with my 24g pod with the MH lights...
I contacted Current USA about it and they said I could get a warranty replacment by contacting the merchant who sold it to me.
Luckily it was Premium Aquatics! They contacted Current on my behalf and had a replacement fan mailed directly to me absolutely free! The new fan was a different brand and is very quiet!
It was a bit tricky as the vantec fan is wired for 3 prongs and the AP stock fan had 2 prongs. It took a bit of duct tape engineering but I got the fan to work.
The result was great, noise level cut in half!!
I only hooked up one of the fans as I did not see a place to "plug" in the second fan. I did however take the cover plate off the second fan slot.
