AquaPod 24G Sand Choice?

don't plan on keeping the stock light. i'm very close to buying the 4.36 (144w) hood from nanotuners. i know there are cheaper alternatives, but i want to keep the hood on the tank. considering other mods i would do instead, the price difference isn't that much.

any experience with that mod?

no but if I upgrade, i'm going to remove the hood and go with a Viper K2 150 MH clip on, why bother modding an exsisting hood if you're going to upgrade lighting. the only other upgrade from PC for me would be MH. Plus, i don't know if the price is right for me.

i considerd going that route and it would be cheaper, however, as my buddy would say - sometimes i prefer form over function. even though the viper still looks nice, i got the aquapod because i liked the closed lid. figure 144w should be plenty light for anything i want to do.

i've also seen folks put a skimmer (forget the brand) on behind the viper. that was pretty neat.

oh, and your tank looks very nice. i've only been up and running for about 7 weeks now. long way to go.

If you get sand from jone's beach, you'll pick up some nice medical waste as well.

I really don't want to use crush coral. But, is there is a reason why many of you use 2 or more different types/sizes of sand for your DSB. I know I waqnt to do a DSB. I currently have some bags of Southdown left over and want to use it too. I'm concern that it may be too fine, as I had the toughest time cleaning the top layer of my sand bed w/ my Python cleaner.

It also has very little storage or room for expansion. I have seen a few others use rolling kitchen carts from Target and other big box stores. What a cool idea, to use rolling carts as stands. I am going to look into this, as I have heard that the traditional nano stands are not good. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm running the tank on a 5 inch sandbed using layers of Caribsea sand...first layer CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand(40lbs, about 3 inches), second layer CaribSea Seaflor Fiji Pink Reef Sand (15lbs, about 1 inch) and top layer CaribSea Seaflor Super Reef Sand (25lbs, 1.5 inches).

I'm use to DSB in my other systems and since I'm a fan of the Jawfish (have one in all 4 of my systems) I can say that I'm happy with my DSB. My gallery has some pics of the 24 Pod for reference, have you decided on mods you might make on your system? I would suggest changing the return pump to a maxijet 1200 and watch out for temp issues.


The current mods that I have planned for my new 24G Aquapod are:

1). Switch out the standard powerhead source to a Maxi-Jet 1200.

2). Attaching a Hydor Flo to the Maxi-Jet 1200.

BTW, the Hydro Flo is on sale for $8.99 as of today at Marine Depot. I just got an update on the price this morning!

Not long ago I took several friends to Target with me inorder to try out the weight limit on the stands. After a few minutes of "testing" they politely asked us to stop jumping on their displays. Our testing had to stop but not before we were able to load the stand with about 700Lbs. of not-to-inteligent man fat. The wheels held up but I don't think that they would last long under a heavy load, and you certainly wouldn't want to roll the tank around on them.
