Aquapod Fan replacement

For those that replaced your fans, what fans did you use, i hear a lot of people choosing quieter fans, and even adding a second fan, will this cool of my tank more? My temp isnt that bad, its at like 81-82, rarely over 82, its more of the aquapod fan sounds like Crap, it really sounds like its going to die. Any suggestions, any write ups on how to do it, i really suck at electrical.

I used a Vantec Stealth 60mm fan.

The Vantec fan has 3 prongs and on the Aquapod the plug for the fan has 2 prongs. So you either have to wire it or buy a 2 to 3 prong adapter.

I wired mine but I would recommend getting an adapter. You should be able to get one at Radio Shack or equivalent.

If you use the adapter it will be simple to do and you should have no trouble with it.

Oh yeah, the only other thing is that I had to overdrill the Vantec fan a bit where the screws go that attach the fan to the Aquapod such that the screws would sink down far enough to attach to the Aquapod.

They won't blow on the water unless you cut a hole in the clear plastic shroud. I've been tempted to do this but afraid it might cause corrosion of the lighting components.

This site has everything you can think of for cooling.
My idea was in back of the hood using a couple of these ducts and some 80mm fan or larger with some flexible duct working to get air on to the surface.

i agree with the need for cooling equipment and surface agitation. those are a necessity. and you have to find a good balance. but as for me, the nano's should be seen and not heard. except for water noise. actualy rather soothing. but the whirl of a turbine, and equipment buzz, is not for me.

thanks for all of your replies. From what i understand the Vantech Stealth fans are the fans that a lof of people use. The vantech fans are 20 dba, and i beleive the stock fan is 26, so it should be quieter, however, i heard that they push less air out. So if i get two, would the be quieter and more efficient at pushing out the hot air?

So if i go with the Vantech fans, do i have to buy a 2-3 prong adaptor? i think i am just gonna add the second fan and replace the stock, is there any sort of walkthrough on this. i dont like the fact of cutting anything.

Enraged, that looks like a good idea, i just want to keep it simple though, thats one of the reasons why i got a nano for my desk, ALL in One.

If anyone has pics of theyre installations it would be helpful.

thanks everyone for your replies.

Yea but I have been thinking long and hard about a MH retrofit kit so if i do end up going that way then i want max air movement in that hood
Plus it would be fun to do because i have not seen many do anything really fun with the Ap12's yet.

I could be wrong, but if your using Metal Halide, you will be going topless, and heat wont be enclosed so you can probably use a regular desk fan to blow across the top of the water. Or will you fit the MH in the hood, in that case your idea will probably be your best bet.

Nah i was thinking of putting this one in the hood.

they have a 70 watt retro that would fit in my hood.
then i could cut a square out of the splash gaurd and silicon in a peice of uv glass.
I was figuring i could just remove the stock daylight bulb assembly completely. that will free up lots of space.
who knows everything i want to keep doesnt really need a MH but i think the color just looks better.

my fan just crapped the bed and def. gonna order these fans asap. I cant find the 2-3 pin adaptor, can you explain how to wire these without the adaptor? do you have pics?

Thanks,

Jeff

If I were you I would buy an adapter. I'm no electrician so I really shouldn't give advice in that area.

You can buy the adapter online for a buck

2-pin to 3-pin adapter

Or at least that link will give you an idea of what to look for locally/online.

Google "2-pin 3-pin adapter" for a bunch of results.

thanks all, yeah i couldnt find the adapter on the Newegg site, but yeah i can see them on performance-pcs. I will order them over lunch. Anyone know where they have fast delivery? I would like to get them by friday. Enraged, i see that theyre are 4 different styles, A,B,C, and D, does it matter which one i get?

thanks,

Jeff

Its either A or D
I am leaning towards A and it would be the one i would order.
Even if it is not the correct one you can just file the tabs on the male connector off so it slides in not a super big deal. best bet is to pull the splash guard and have a quick peak. getting to the board for the fans doesn't require pulling the bulbs and all that just move the reflector over a bit and have a look. Let me know and i can most likely do it at lunch for you if needed.
(provided they have not changed the fan board from version to version.)

Thanks all. well i ordered two fans, and 2 adaptors, actually 4, i ordered 1 of the A's and 2 of the D's since they were only a buck each, and it would suck if i got the wrong ones. WIll let you guys know how the install goes.
