Aquarium Adventure

As some of you know, I had Aquarium Adventure install my system a few months back. I just wanted to come here and share my experience so that others may learn from it. I have a 75G. Mind you that I work from home, and was with the installer watching every step of the setup.

Keep in mind, that at the time, I was very much new to the hobby, and had no way of knowing whether things were being done correctly, or even in the correct order.

The first day of the install, the service coordinator showed up and began the install. Once the tank, overflow kit, sump, return pump, and chiller were set up. He began to fill the tank with water. Once the tank was filled and the water started going to the sump, he found out that the sump (brand new adhi30 had a leak; adhi sent me a new one no questions asked). Took us about 20 minutes to get all water out of the sump/stand, at which time, he had to disconnect the sump and return pump in order to remove the sump. This of course could have been avoided with a simple test of the sump prior to installation. Naturally that is something I know now, but would expect an expert to do.

A few weeks later (once the new sump arrived) the service coordinator returned to re-do the install. Once again, he did not test the sump and connected it (I actually tested it myself, without his knowledge, so I didn't make a point of mentioning it). The second time, everything was functioning as it should.

I began to cycle the tank with a limited photoperiod (using only T5s). Once the tank was cycled, I began to use both MH and T5's. As soon at the water temp went up to the limit I set, the chiller went on. The chiller remained on for hours with little effect on the tank. This is a 1/4 horsepower chiller for a 75gl. After this happened for the second day in a row, I took out the chiller installation instructions and reviewed them. Under REQUIREMENTS FOR VENTILATION it stated that at least 18" are required both for the front/back of the chiller, and at least 6" clearance on each sides. The Aquarium Adventure service coordinator installed it with about 2" clearance on the back, and 2" on each side (wedged between the stand and the corner of the room). So basically, all the hot air had nowhere to go, and was not drawn away from the chiller. Even though this is explicitly stated on the first page on the installation instructions. Again, if I had the knowledge, I would have pointed it out, but I expected the installer to know this. I ended up buying more tubing and reinstalling the chiller at a location that will allow for adequate ventilation. Since then, rather than being on for about 6-7 hours a day, it goes on once a day for about an hour.

I also had the installer set up my RO/DI unit and had it connected to a Brute container on the second floor. He installed the RO/DI unit and drilled through the Brute container to install an auto shut-off valve which he brought. Once he turned the water on, and saw that it is going into the tank, he did not test to see that the auto shut-off valve works. i.e. pulling the float up to see that the water does not continue to flow into the container.

I have been diligent at never letting the water get that high, mostly because I just don't need that much water on a regular basis. A few weeks ago, I return home to see water pouring down from the recessed lighting in my living room. I ran upstairs and, of course, the auto shut off valve did not work, and I had a flood on the second floor, as well as the first. So.... after hours of a shop-vac/paper towel/buckets fiasco, I was able to dry everything off. At this point, water damage is evident both upstairs and downstairs.

I contacted Aquarium Adventure the next day, and was told that the person I need to speak with was not there. I called again the next day, and was told that he is still not there, but the service coordinator was there. I spoke with him and he said that he would have Dan call me back that day. I did not receive a call that day, but 4 days later, I did get a call. I was busy at the time, so Dan left a message. I called him back within 5 minutes, at which point he was unavailable. I left a message for him. Dan did not return my call for over a week, at which point I called again and was told by the person who answered the phone, that Dan will call me back that day. A week later, I still have not heard from him. I called today and spoke to Tom. Tom was not willing to even talk about it, stating that it's not their fault. He said that the part must be faulty and that it's not their responsibility to test to see if it works. He did not offer to come out and look, or check out the install. At this point, a complaint has been filed with the BBB and this will begin to be a legal matter.

I will not make any judgments at this point, and only want to share the details. I would say that I am extremely dissatisfied with the install, and am appalled at the lack of customer service and follow up. I would simply say that unless you are willing to test all parts yourself, as well as have the knowledge to verify all aspects of the build/install, think twice before spending (quite a bit) your money on paying for an installation from Aquarium Adventure. I suppose next time I take my car in to my dealer, I better run those new breaks through a series of tests to make sure they work, before I have the dealer install them.

Aquarium Adventure.....an Adventure indeed.

Man, that is bad news. I am sorry to hear it went that way, although I am not entirely surprised given their reputation. Hopefully others that read this will be able to learn from your experience. Wonder if their lousy customer service was worth it. By not working with you they now risk legal fees, additional bad rep and possible loss of business.

Again sorry to hear about this.

Damn bro thats really sux ....I have not had a good experience withh AA either and I also know first hand at the ol phone tag game they play when dealing with a discruntled customer ......... If you ever have any questions or need any help feel free to give me a pm or a call ill pm you my number ........

Well, if it were me I would reverse the charges on that credit card and document EVERYTHING that went wrong. Take as many pictures as possible and explain what each picture is in writing. Video may even be better for proof. I know things are probably dried up by now but I'm sure if there was water coming through the ceiling then there is going to be water damage involved.
Read over that installation contract and see if they are supposed to setup, install and TEST or INSPECT everything for the money you paid.

I can GUARANTEE you they will get ahold of you when they see the reversal. The fear of losing money works wonders compared to the fear of losing customer satisfaction for some companies. Hit them where it hurts and they WILL do something about it. A small claims case would be relatively simple and definitely worth a shot.

The WORST thing that would happen is that you would be responsible for the charges that they initially took from you.
The best case is that you add up all the damages and the time that you took to clean up, repair and contact them and subtract it from the total then pay the difference and call it even.

By the description of the installation it sounds as if they filled your tank with tap water instead of RO/DI water which could very easily cause you months of headaches trying to remove unwanted algae growth and cause you to have phosphate issues due to the water quality.

I know the last thing you want to hear is "I told you so" but we all got on that original thread and made the case for doing it yourself with our help instead of AA. I think there were some guys offering to come over for a few beers or pizza.

I hope this experience doesn't turn you off to the hobby but it should turn you off to AA. It sounds like you are very good at reading the manuals and figuring things out on your own. If there is anything you need help understanding or verifying just post it here and we will help to the best of our abilities. If you get the tank cycled and would like some soft corals frags for free just let me know. You can come out and I can cut a bunch of anthelia, xenia and Kenya Tree. I also have other corals to frag if you wanted to get something later.

Sorry that your entry into the hobby turned out to be such a bad one but look at it this way... It can only get better now :)

they are a joke out there. i will NEVER even go through the door again ,,,,dont even see how they make it in that big of a store in a strip mall, it has to be WAY expensive in that place per month ,,, cant see how they do it ,,, i guess if they sold 4 yellow tangs per month @ $978.99 per tang,,,,,,, they could make rent payments

4 yellow tangs @ $978.99 per tang would'nt pay a quarter of the rent. Rent there is probably about $18K monthly.

Cosmo, sorry to hear about your situation. I wish you the best. I bragged up Matt O. from AA in your original post. I hope it wasn't him. Good luck with a resolution.

you guys need to chat up the sales staff, I caught a guy on his way out, they push a S*** load of product... every time i walk in there, i see a new sucker being told to buy things like canister filters for $250. I just want to grab the person by the arm and pull them outside for a quick talk.

I wont buy from there because of the drug dealer i saw in there who was complaining about a fish they sold him as "reef safe" (flame). I told him he couldn't put a flasher wrasse in his tank as it was too passive for the other fish in his tank, i told him a 6line would be better, so the guy made the sales kid put the flasher in a tank with similar fish he had... which to my disbelief the sales kid grabed the fish, walked it to another tank, threw it in, waited 5 minutes, pulled it out and put it back in the original tank. God i hate people sometimes :c). Normally while driving--but thats another story.

It is the nicest looking store in the area though, which is a shame. I tend to walk out of there sad more and more often.

On topic, sorry to hear about your story, I hope you wernt one of the people i almost talked to in there. TO their credit, i have a very nice lemonpeel angel i got from them who has been a very hardi fish (lemonpeels are sometimes finicky), but fish are hit and miss most places.

Sagi,

If you ever need help, we are here. A 75 gal setup is childs play to most of the people that surf this forum. Just post or PM us if you need any assistance.

man that sucks.

i remember when you came to us in the first place, someone should have been more adamant about telling you not to rely on them, The next guy that comes on here with AA problems should be told to stay away from them.

How do you know he was a drug dealer?

Thanks for all the replies and support.

Many of you warned me about using AA when I first came here. Unfortunately, at the time, this whole thing seemed like a very complicated process, and I THOUGHT having a professional do it was the smart thing to do. I had no idea that people on this board knew so much. I feel like right now, I could do it myself, but at the time I was naive.

itZme - you are correct, AA filled my tank with tap water, and I have been battling different algae outbreaks for months. I have it under control now (or so I think). I will look into a chargeback as soon as I return in two weeks. I like your positive attitude.

USAquatics - again, no judgments, but it was Matt who installed it.

MurphSalty - I'm sure the way they make it is by doing a lot of commercial work, rather than only "catering" to hobbyists.

Akronviper -

Mike C. - Thanks again, and check your pm.

I will be leaving for two weeks, so I will miss the last meeting :(

I hope it didn't seem as if my tone was low. I'm so happy I started with this hobby, and can't wait to see where it goes. I also wanted to add some tank shots. I'm still using the 10k's, so it's really yellow :(

I just received a response from the BBB saying that they are attempting to contact AA. I will keep updating this thread with any progress.
