Aquarium Chemistry: Strontium and the Reef Aquarium

I used to test and dose for Sr, but it's pointless IMO. I saw no change in color, polyp extension, growth, etc. Plus the test for it takes about 15-20 minutes to do(Salifert).

I've actually been dosing strontium for a couple of years now...I never thought about it because that along with other trace elements I thought would be taken care of in a wc. This is true with smaller lesser demanding systems, but on larger sytems with many SPS, larger skimmers etc.. they remove elements quicker. On a recomendation for loss of color at the time I tested it with a Salifert test kit and even though I know it's not that accurate the measurements were not even on the chart it was so low....so I started dosing it and test it every month or so now.

Anthony, this is a good thread. Just because many people differ on opinion doesn't mean its either bad or good. Great input from all.

I didn't realize the skimmer pulls metals (inorganic compounds) out of the water.. I thought it was purely organic for some reason..

I do dose Lugol's 1x per week. I started doing it when I began to feed my fish more and it was also around the same time I started to use Roti-Feast & Oyster Feast. My colors definitely improved.....so I can't say if it was just one thing but the combo of all 3 has been working for me so I have kept it up. My Radiums also really help the colors.
