Aquarium cleaning company stole gem tang :O

Thank god this did not happen to me...

I was at my local LSF yesterday afternoon and I was talking to a fellow reefer and the LFS owner. He said to me that a aquarium cleaning company that he hired to take care of the tank while he is on vacation for a month stole his adult gem tang. He told me that when he returned, he wasn't able to find his gem tang anywhere and the rock work within the tank looked a somewhat strange like pieces have been taken out of the tank and later put back in. He called the company asking for what happened. Their response was, "umm it died and we threw it away..." He argued with the company for an hour, asking them to how come they did not inform him or at least took a picture of the dead fish that is worth $5k. Anyway the argument resulted in nothing as the company insisted they didn't know how valuable the fish was and just threw it away.

Here comes the more interesting part. I must first point out that this company also restocks the tanks of some of its customers, so although they do not display and sell fish like a LSF, they house fish for special requests or restocking. Anyway the guy came to my LSF several days later and tell them the story. LSF owner got suspicious and called the company asking for if they have any "adult" gem tang for sale since one of his customers is considering buying one. They said they have one. Now all my life I have never seen an adult gem tang offered for sale (especially by an cleaning company that does not maintain a fish display. ). Both the LFS owner and the guy are certain that it is the same fish. LFS owner said he will go to their warehouse and take some pictures of the fish (acting like the customer asked for pictures) to compare it to the old pictures of the original owners. I never had a gem tang but the LFS owner was sure that the markings are specific to each fish and can be used to identify. If they match the guy said he will sue the company.

His advice for anyone using companies to take care of fish was; either sing an agreement where the company is liable for the death of fish under their care (most will not sign this) or ask them to sign an agreement that they will take photographical evidence of dead fish (at least very expensive ones) and store the remains in a freezer until the owner returns to sees it.

Hopefully no one from the aquarium company reads RC and the plan gets foiled.

He went their to take the pictures yesterday (I got worried and called him :D). So even if they read the forum (I doubt :)), it will be too late for them :D. I think it all depends if fish can truly be identified based on markings and if the quality of the old pictures are high enough to make such a comparison.

Hopefully if they are guilty there will be enough proof to send them to jail. I have no idea how unique the spots are on the gem tang. Hopefully more unique than fingerprints.

its funny my lfs just texted me this morning and said he can get a gem tang for 3000 if i wanted it. funny i read this today

P.S. I wouldn't have bothered with all the drama. I would have called them and told them that the hidden nanny cam captured the whole thing and that they had an hour to return it or the cops get the video.

I thought the common practice of a fish maintenance company was to freeze the fish corpse for you, so you can see it? That's what most the companies around here do.

I would not have been as nice as this guy. Especially after hearing that the company now had a gem. I won't say what kinds of things are going thru my mind but I don't think the company would be in business anymore when I got done.

That is not a bad idea lol but with a fish that expensive and someone else caring for them i would have a camera on the tank anyways no matter what. 5k is alot of money.

When I worked for an aquarium maintenance company many years ago, the contract specifically stated that any fish that died was to be kept and shown to the owner.

I used to be subcontracted by a guy to clean commercial and residential tanks. Fish died occasionally, and I was never told to take pictures. But these weren't $5k fish.

If you don't mind me asking, what state did this happen in?

A Gem tang will have a paper trail. The tank owner just needs to get the prosecutor to put charges against the maintenance company and they will be forced to provide prrof of ownership.

Man that is crazy if they actually did that. Can't imagine risking your entire business (and possibly your freedom) over 1 fish. I know it is expensive and harder to find but not THAT hard to find.

oldpaddy, this happened in Washington.

Man, this guy is way too chill.

If that was me, and the LFS found out they had a gem tang available I would already be knocking on their door with my 2 friends who are police officers. We would be very polite and I'd be leaving with my gem tang.

The likely hood they have a gem tang "in stock" when they don't even have a display tank is well.....Also, like posted above, they would have paperwork for a 5K fish.

Going after them would be secondary and very enjoyable.

On another note, hopefully this guy had his locks re-keyed and new pass codes on his alarm put in.
