Here's what I was thinking of doing. I have little to maybe no interest in reef fish and my 125 is looking a little dull. I was thinking of using eggcrate, maybe 2-3 large pieces, and splitting it into 2 parts. Putting a large O.s. in one side and maybe a Pseudosquilla ciliata, or any other decent size stomatopod I can find for the other side. My question is has anyone ever tried doing this? Do you think the O.S. would break through the eggcrate if he REALLY wanted to? Would he just leave it alone? I was thinking one side of the tank is PLENTY enough room for him to roam around so he may not attack the eggcrate to break though. I would make sure the eggcrate went to the bottom of the tank so that he could not just sumply burrow under it. Any and all help is much appreciated.

I'd use acrylic instead of eggcrate...that stuff is EASY to break. Just use a dremel and cut some small slits in the acrylic :) That way it is clear also instead of an ugly white divider
 
Yes, but I thought if the 2 mantis were out and saw eachother they might start attacking the divider. where can I buy a piece of acrylic though?
 
I dunno where you can find acrylic, but the locla glass shop would probly have some. I would get a blak acrylic for safety's sake, but it might look ugly in your tank.....
 
Here is what I did. Please tell me if someone has improvements I can make, or a better idea because i think it is ugly as hell.

It seperates a 30gal and houses a P. Ciliata on one side, and a G. Chigara on the other.

I have never seen them go after one another, but I have seen the P. Ciliata eye a damsel on the other side. The seperator goes to the bottem of the tank, and about a cm from the top.

If anyone can figure out how to make a seperator look really good, they should post it and a how to for how they did it.

BTW, what is eggcrate?
 
eggcrate, or i think thats what its called, is that white divider you have. I was thinking of having it go straight up and down instead of diagonally like you have it. anyone know the cost of the actylic? I might just go with the eggcrate if its a good deal cheaper.
 
I looked at acryllic and it was like 20 or 30 for a sheet. My worries were about flow through the acryllic. I tried drilling holes in a sheet, and it didnt work to well.
 
well i would set it up as theres an overflow on each side, but yes I also believe the eggcrate would provide water flow much better than acrylic
 
Yeah, that is mine. Thanks, I havnt fed it a live fish in a while though. I feel too bad...

So nobody knows any better solution for a tank divider than my ugly one? Theres got to be a DIY, how-to, or something for something that looks better...
 
lol im not gonna lie, the quality wasn't "national geoGRAPHIC" (tee hee) but still cool vid. thx for sharing.
 
IMHO a cube is to small to split for housing 2 animals - 20L would be a more suitable size (dependant on species of course)

Call local glass shops - Chances are you'll find acrylic there - Ask for scrap pieces, they'll cost less or free even.

I don't see why not - If you worried, may be stop the acrylic 1-3 inches from the top edge of tank - Then use eggcrate the rest of the way up.
 
I'm going to use 2-3 sheets of eggcrate to seperate the 2 mantis shrimp. I'm probably going to get a peacock for one side and squilla rugosa (hopefully) or a different spearer for the other side. will show up pics when I get everything in.
