Aquarium jobs...

After looking at some posts tonight, I started thinking about work (I know it’s the weekend) and thought I would post this up for the club…

I’ve been working for SeaWorld in the aquarium dept. for the past 8 years. We sometimes seem to have a hard time finding qualified people to hire as new aquarists, while other times we have too many!. We post allot on AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and at job fairs but as of late don’t get too many hits and seldom get any interest from people with aquarium experience. So I thought that I would try the one place I know that everyone has some aquarium experience…. Reefcentral / ORCA.

If anyone here is interested in working as an Aquarist or Husbandry Assistant let me know. Probably by PM would be best. Or check www.buschjobs.com or www.becjobs.com I don’t think there are any posting now but I can give you an idea when they will be posted or give your info. To the HR dept.

For our aquarium Husbandry Assistant positions, they are looking for a high school diploma and some college work. Many of our full time Aquarists started as HA’s. A college degree is needed for the Aquarist positions. These jobs are allot of diving. So a diving certification is also needed.

Honestly, some of the entry level jobs are not glamorous and require very hard work. It’s really what you make of it. Lots of opportunities to learn and move up if you want to work hard. It also gets you experience that’s very hard to find.

My wife works at Discovery Cove in the aquarium and they are sometime in need of aquarist too. Same stuff, just more guest interaction.

Feel free to ask me any questions. Trust me I wouldn’t recommend something I didn’t like myself!

That's cool you're reaching out here Justin I am happy to see that we local aquarists might make good fodder for your programs! I only wished I lived a little closer to Sea World - working like that would be a tremendous opportunity when trying to break into the professional world if you want to work with animals.

Man, if you had posted this a month ago, I may have been available. I might get in touch with you at the beginning of next year(depending on my contract with my new company).

justinzimm, tell your HR dept. that Travis^^ would be the find of a lifetime for them. He is determined to have a carreer at Seaworld, and as hard as he is working to get there, it wouldn't surprise me to see him running the park by the time he retires.

Thanks,
All PM have been replied to.

The minimum is 20 hr/wk. And that is 5 days from 6:00a to 10:00. ( I know, 6:00am is pretty rough) The normal full time aquarium shift is from 6:00 to 2:30. Sometimes they will work with your schedule if you have school or other jobs.

Lots of our past applicants have never worked with fish/aquariums. I would like to change that! Even more want to work with dolphins or be trainers. They think AQ is a way to get their foot in the door then transfer.

man..I could work that. IF I was more of a morning person and never wanted a day off. I go into my full time job at 2 in the afternoon......grrrrr..

Once you get to the full time aquarist level the pay is pretty comperable to some of my friends who are teachers. Compared to some other smaller aquariums that are not for profit it's really good. During our busy seasons we have allot of opportunity for over time. (time and 1/2) :)

Matt moved to Chicago to work at a small aquarium that I can't remeber the name off (not shedd) right now...

Sometimes we promote from within so it might not be posted. If we are opening it to outside applicants I'll let everyone know. Also keep checking the web sites I posted above. Any jobs will be put on there too. Don't be shy to call our HR dept. All our hiring goes throught them first.

I'm kinda out of the loop at work. Just had a baby girl! And haven't been to work in a couple weeks!!!
