After looking at some posts tonight, I started thinking about work (I know it’s the weekend) and thought I would post this up for the club…
I’ve been working for SeaWorld in the aquarium dept. for the past 8 years. We sometimes seem to have a hard time finding qualified people to hire as new aquarists, while other times we have too many!. We post allot on AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and at job fairs but as of late don’t get too many hits and seldom get any interest from people with aquarium experience. So I thought that I would try the one place I know that everyone has some aquarium experience…. Reefcentral / ORCA.
If anyone here is interested in working as an Aquarist or Husbandry Assistant let me know. Probably by PM would be best. Or check www.buschjobs.com or www.becjobs.com I don’t think there are any posting now but I can give you an idea when they will be posted or give your info. To the HR dept.
For our aquarium Husbandry Assistant positions, they are looking for a high school diploma and some college work. Many of our full time Aquarists started as HA’s. A college degree is needed for the Aquarist positions. These jobs are allot of diving. So a diving certification is also needed.
Honestly, some of the entry level jobs are not glamorous and require very hard work. It’s really what you make of it. Lots of opportunities to learn and move up if you want to work hard. It also gets you experience that’s very hard to find.
My wife works at Discovery Cove in the aquarium and they are sometime in need of aquarist too. Same stuff, just more guest interaction.
Feel free to ask me any questions. Trust me I wouldn’t recommend something I didn’t like myself!
