aquarium overflow not taking water

i woke up this morning and the water in my sump was very low so i filled it up and went about getting ready. i walked back by my tank and saw that there was water spilling out the top of my tank and my overflow was not siphening any water. I dont know much about these and was wondering if anybody has any clue as to what would cause this.

is it a siphon overflow? did you lose siphon? is there any way a snail or something could have gotten into the drain pipe?

yes, i lost syphon and now i just restored it but its not pulling water from the tank fast enough so the tank level just keeps getting higher and higher until it overflows.
