aquarium-safe bug control?

so i have a bunch of little black ants running around the corner of my house. its also in the same room as my tank. no matte rhow many of those sticky traps and sprays (form a handheld can) i do, they are still around.

so what i now am resorting to is one of those entire house bombs.

i want to know if any of you have had success with these in the same area as your tank, and what i should look for in the spray that will garuntee things will go weel.

dont panic, I HAVENT PURCHASED OR DONE ANYTHING YET

any information would be great. thanks!

What kind of ants?

What makes you think that a fogger is going to work?

You likely need to call an exterminator. You will want to ensure the skimmer is off and the tank is covered as long as their is pesticide in the air.

Look for a product in the trap and bug killer at ACO called Terro. It works WONDERS, and is what most pro exterminators use. I like the baits, It takes a couple weeks but gets rid of the root ant base. Heres a link with the stuff i use.

If you have a lesco or John Deer Landscape dealership in your area, you can get Talstar. Maybe under a diff name, but they will know what it is. It worlks well and also has a 90 day residual effect.

Many exterminators use it. It is also very low odor, which is why it is popular to use inside the house. It is actually a termaside but works great on ants too.

Oh yea, I mix it at one half once per gallon of water. I just use a common household garden sprayer for it. If it moves, Talstar will usually kill it. Termites, bugs, spiders etc etc etc

I remember someone having their house fumigated, it may have been on reeflounge as opposed to here, Ill see if I can find the post. In the end he didnt have any problems at all. That being said I also have a friend that nuked his tank by spraying febreeze in the room.

Found the post, he covered the tank in 4 mil plastic, turned off all filtration and ran an airstone via an air pump outside. Everything was fine.

If you really have a bug problem, its best to get an exterminator, and to talk to them about your tank prior to treatment. If they dont know anything about the well being of your tank and have never come across one in their work before, find someone who has. It may be pricey, but would it cost more than replacing your entire tank? And if something should happen and they claim that its safe for your tank, at least you may have a possible avenue for reimbursement.

I remember that thread.... I think I actually may have had the idea of the outside airpump putting the tank under positive pressure... or somebody did and maybe I just am taking the credit due to an inflated ego and poor memory

Well credit aside, its a fine idea. Still a scary prospect though, Ill buy an ant eater before spraying pesticide anywhere near my tank.

aardvarks are one of my favorites. Nothing like ants out of their homes with your extra long nozzle. (not that they actually snort them up... they lick em with a long sticky tongue) And to think that we have to use spoons and forks to eat...

Its a scary idea when you consider pesticide is made to kill bugs, and then come to realize that 99% of the inhabitants in your tank are bugs. Better be some pretty big ants, carrying away some family members or the dog before I bust out the raid.

wow, thanks for all the feedback everyone!

i ended up buying the "bait" traps that have a poisen food the ants take back to their colony an ditll totally wipe them out that way. i think the worst is behind me, a couple weeks ago they were REALLY bad. but seeing as im 20 years old and live alone, there wasnt much food or snacks sitting around for them (its funny that once it gets bad enouigh to do somthing, the problem basically fixes itself)

but if that doesnt work, ill try that spray stuff, and if THAT doesnt work...

i guess ill ask jamokie where the best ant-eater farm is it
